Recently, 28 students were conferred by Leonardo the end-of-year diplomas for the fourth edition of the #AerotechAcademy, the advanced training course on cutting-edge engineering topics, born from the collaboration between our company and the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. Thanks to the synergy with the Neapolitan University, the Aerotech Academy links training and the workplace, giving impetus to the skills necessary both for a large industry like #Leonardo and for small and medium-sized enterprises in the supply chain, generating competitiveness and #innovation, for the benefit of territories in which it operates.   The fourth edition of the master’s degree explored advanced topics of engineering research and applications of interest to the manufacturing industry, using innovative teaching and learning methodologies. During the final ceremony, all the participants presented their project works, which, by inserting themselves into company’s areas of interest, contributed to exploring new business lines. The main guiding themes were innovative materials and processes for aeronautical components, intended for new supersonic aircraft, new technologies for the design and creation of #eVTOL (electric Vertical Take Off & Landing), environmental #sustainability, recycling, optimization of the use of raw materials and the reduction of climate-altering emissions.   After the success of participation seen in the last four years, registrations are already open for the fifth edition of the Aerotech Academy, aimed at students with an educational qualification at least equal to a three-year degree, to be selected through a specific call. #Leonardo and Rheinmetall have signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (#MoU) to establish a new 50:50 joint venture aimed at developing a European industrial and technological approach in the field of land defense systems.   The objective of the agreement is the industrial development and subsequent commercialization of the new Main Battle Tank (MBT) and the new Lynx Platform for the Armoured Infantry Combat System (AICS), within the Italian Army’s ground systems programs.   Roberto Cingolani, CEO of Leonardo: “Technology and industrial synergies between Leonardo and Rheinmetall are a unique opportunity to develop state-of-the-art Main Battle Tanks and Infantry Vehicles. In May 2024, the kick-off meeting of the two winning projects of the technological challenge "Bio-inspired sensor technology" took place at our Campi Bisenzio site (Florence). This is one of the five challenges hosted within #SolversWanted, #Leonardo's technological scouting platform that identifies and promotes innovative solutions, in collaboration with universities, research centres, companies and start-ups on a global scale. 💡 The Bio-inspired sensor technology challenge, launched in October 2023, was aimed at finding solutions in the field of neuromorphic sensors to be used in Detection & Tracking applications. The winners of the challenge were awarded a 12-month contract for direct collaboration with Leonardo: 🏆 The EYE-TECH start up from Carrara with the EYE2DRIVE - Building the digital EYE project, aims to provide a prototype system to be used for image acquisition tests in critical situations and highly variable and non-optimal lighting conditions. 🏆 The Department of Computer Science, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering of the University of Genoa (Università degli Studi di Genova) with the SENSE-NN - symbolic end-to-end neuromorphic sensing project, with the objective of developing a robust hybrid framework that will employ neuromorphic sensors within a Large Language Model (LLM) capable of making rapid decisions, because it will use the data coming from the sensors, avoiding canonical algorithmics. https://lnkd.in/dsk4WWNF #Leonardo4Innovation

The #AW609 #tiltrotor programme set another major industry capability milestone after its first successful ship trial, which was recently conducted with the support of the Italian Navy (Marina Militare).   From April 3-12, the AW609 AC4 aircraft, fully representative of the final production configuration, performed demonstration trials relocating from Leonardo’s facility based in Cascina Costa (Samarate) to Maristaer Grottaglie Naval Base. The tiltrotor, with test pilots and flight test engineers from Leonardo (supported by Italian Navy personnel for the embarked operations), took off from the base inbound from the Italian aircraft carrier (ITS CAVOUR - Navy Fleet Flagship), 20 nm offshore, showing its effective approach, stable deck landing, and touchdown capabilities. The demonstration trials are the latest step taken in the activities carried out by a joint working group established in 2022 that includes #Leonardo, the Italian Navy, the Esercito Italiano - Italian Army and Italy's Customs Police (Guardia di Finanza). The working group is intended to evaluate the potential of tiltrotor technologies as complementary capabilities to the assets already in use among government services, providing a fast long range capability with vertical take-off and landing and fast cruise, above the weather thanks to the AW609’s unique pressurized cabin and high altitude performance. #Leonardo met with trade union representatives at the headquarters of Unindustria in Rome today to announce a further step in the diversification of its Grottaglie production site, a plant originally built for the Boeing 787 #Dreamliner programme.   During today's meeting with trade union representatives, Leonardo announced that it had selected the Grottaglie site for its particular features as the location for final assembly of the company’s #AW609 tiltrotor in Italy.   Leonardo has for some time been diversifying production at the Taranto plant through industrial activities under latest-generation programmes such as the Eurodrone wing, the fuselage of Vertical Aerospace's VX4 electric aircraft, and the fuselage of the prototype of Leonardo's remotely piloted Proteus helicopter. These programmes, still in the embryonic phase, already occupy a workforce of more than 100 people.   The development of further strategic initiatives aims to redefine new scenarios for the Grottaglie site as part of Leonardo's broader strategy of ensuring a sustainable future for its Aerostructures business area, in which approximately 300 million euros have already been invested between 2019 and 2023. https://lnkd.in/dyifmscJ   #LDO_PR

Mauro Rostagno, Head of Avionic Systems for #LeonardoAircraft, shares with us his inspiring 20-year professional path, contributing to numerous research and technological innovation projects on all of #Leonardo's aircraft programmes. ✈️ An Engineering unit, composed of 340 engineers and internal specialists, under his responsibility, works on all the phases that precede and follow the implementation of avionic systems and the related ground support systems in all Leonardo fixed-wing aircraft programmes. “The evolution of such complex systems is a challenge and the only way to rise to it today is through innovation and digitalisation applied to both the avionic systems and the development process,” Mauro explains. “For example, we cannot afford to discover the existence of significant issues when the project is at an advanced stage of development. Instead, through a digital copy of the system (known as a digital twin), we can verify the project’s validity by identifying any problems in time and providing the necessary solutions.” 🗣 When asked what the prospects are for a recent #STEM graduate, Mauro has no doubts, “Compared to when I joined the company, prospects are certainly greater today, in terms of training and professional growth.
