📯 🏆 Pilot Photonics is thrilled to announce that its #partnership with the Munster Technological University is bearing fruit. Last week, we were awarded the #Industry #Research Collaboration #Award from #MTU for our #exciting work in developing a new comb #laser for applications in #datacentres and #AI / #ML. Our CEO, William Oppermann, received the award at MTU from Dr. Siobhán Mac Sweeney, Head of Research, who said, "To distinguish a winner, we focused on the impact already generated by the research, the potential for future impact and the wider #benefits of the research to the #economy and #society. The Pilot Photonics project stood apart because of the scale and investment to date in the on-going research and the potential for significant revenue generation down the line as the work continues. Through collaborating with Dr. William Whelan-Curtin (WWC) and his team at MTU, Pilot Photonics is planning to develop a new type of comb laser that will increase their product range. A patent has already been filed to protect the technology developed by the team to date and this will be a very valuable asset for the company. The societal #benefit from this research has the potential to improve #optical #metrology, frequency-chain generation, optical atomic clocks, high-precision #spectroscopy, and more precise #GPS #technology. It was for this impressive and far-reaching impact that we arrived at Pilot Photonics as the winning entry." William Oppermann said, “One of the key spin-outs for Pilot through the collaborative project with MTU is to develop a new comb laser architecture. We have specifically designed this #innovation to target #datacentre and AI/ML applications. 🔬 Cutting-edge Synchrotron Unveiled! 🚀 Yesterday, I had the privilege of witnessing scientific history in the making at the Nanoterasu Synchrotron The facility just launched operations last week, and it is nothing short of revolutionary—with 10 beamlines buzzing with potential, ready to unlock a new realm of research and industrial innovation. What is remarkable is the synergy of academia and industry that brought this project to life. A coalition of industry partners has contributed to financing nearly half the setup costs, and seven beamlines are reserved for their interests, showcasing an impressive model of collaboration that paves the way for future advancements. It was an honor to tour the Synchrotron and Sendai University, where the fusion of science and partnership creates a breeding ground for breakthroughs in synchrotron beamline instrumentation, Micro- and Nanostructuring. Delighted to share our recent publication on the 'Development of A 5-DOF Impedance-Controlled Wearable Upper Limb Exoskeletal Robot'. The robotic exoskeleton mitigates physical strain for workers engaged in load-lifting activities and enhances mobility for individuals with weakened muscles. In the developed system, which can perform active and resistive movements, force-based #impedance control, a novel load suspension system, and a low-cost #emg sensor contribute to effective human-machine interaction. The experimental findings indicate a substantial 99% enhancement in biceps muscle activation, consequent to the utilization of the robot during load-lifting within the elbow flexion-extension axis. 📣 Exciting News: Our Latest Research Paper Published in RA-L We're thrilled to announce that our recent paper "Movement Primitive Diffusion: Learning Gentle Robotic Manipulation of Deformable Objects" has been published in the IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L)! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dne-GSEG 💡 Key Highlights: Movement Primitive Diffusion (MPD) combines the versatility of diffusion-based imitation learning with the high motion quality of Probabilistic Dynamic Movement Primitives (ProDMPs) for gentle manipulation of deformable objects. Through experiments in the real world and in simulation, we show that MPD is data efficient, can learn complex motions for grasping and manipulating deformable objects, and works end-to-end from raw image observations to smooth end-effector trajectories with guaranteed initial conditions. 🎓 Collaboration: This work is the result of collaborative efforts between the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Institute for Anthropomatics and Robotics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Located in Vienna, Austria, it is a a spin-off company from the Quantum Group at the Universität Wien, with founding member the 2022 Nobel Prize laureate Anton Zeilinger. VitreaLab’s disruptive technology will revolutionise the displays as we know them. The fine control of hundreds to million laser beams allows to finally unlock Augmented Reality for outdoor as well as fully-immersive lightweight Virtual Reality goggles. The core product is the Quantum Light Engine, a laser-powered illumination device producing directional, ultra-bright, and efficient light in the form of a laser beams grid. Through the EU Photonics Accelerator Programme, VitreaLab partnered with Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium. 🎉 Exciting News! 📝 My latest research has just been published in #naturecommunications. I'm thrilled to share my paper on on-chip frequency comb sources. This breakthrough technology offers compact, energy-efficient, and cost-effective solutions for various applications from #lidar to #telecommunications. In this paper, we discuss how we overcame the fundamental trade-off between controllability and bandwidth. Traditional approaches either provide broadband combs without control over spectral envelope or offer controlled combs with limited bandwidth. However, through innovative methods, we achieved agile spectral multiplication of a narrowband comb. By exploiting the nonlinear dynamics of a multi-wavelength laser under frequency comb injection, we demonstrated spectral multiplication of the frequency comb at frequency offsets ranging from 26 GHz to 1.3 THz. What's more, our system offers nanosecond switching capability, enabling fast switching and versatility in various applications.
