The final Beluga XL is ready for take-off. Airbus has compeleted the 6th and final Airbus Beluga XL oversized transport aircraft. The Beluga XL was built to replace the A300 based Beluga SST which transported aircraft wings and fuselage sections between various Airbus facilties in Europe. The A330 based Beluga XL is significantly larger than the first variant as the name suggests and can carry an extra 5 tonnes in weight with a 30% increase in cargo space. The most common use in the UK is to transport wings from Airbus Broughton in North Wales to final assembly lines such as Toulouse and Hamburg. Sure, seeing is believing they say, and I've seen video of this behemoth in flight. But it beggars belief. How can an aircraft of this size and shape and with cargo weighing up to 100,000lbs fly on a single pair of engines? Yeah yeah, I know. Power...... The Rolls-Royce (Bristol Siddeley) Snecma, Olympus 593 engine. Four fitted to the Anglo-French Concorde. Each engine produces over 38,000lbs of thrust with re-heat on take-off, accelerating Concorde at an average fully loaded weight of 182 tonnes to a rotation speed of 250mph in around 40 seconds. Yet during the supercruse at Mach Two, around 1350mph the engines are only providing around 35% of the thrust, the remaining thrust is down to the very clever intake system, which slows down the air entering by 1000mph in just 11 feet. First flying in 1969 after a development effort that began in 1956, this aircraft was the result of a collaboration between Britain and France. Flying at up to 60,000 feet at a speed of Mach 2, it could fly the Atlantic routes in half the time a conventional airliner could. Its delta wing was optimized for supersonic flight, but also provided a large amount of vortex lift at the low speeds associated with take-off and landing (and probably a fair amount of drag!). Although its four Rolls-Royce/SNECMA Olympus turbojets had afterburners (or reheat, as it is called in the UK), it was capable of supercruise when in flight. Twenty of these beautiful aircraft were built and they were a commercial success until 2000, when declining demand after a crash in Paris and rising operating expenses combined to eventually cause its withdrawal from service in 2003. #supersonicflight #reheat #vortexlift #aeronautics #jetengines #aviationhistory #aviationhistoryanddoodles

Venus Aerospace founders Sassie and Andrew Duggleby have offered some titbits about their proposed hypersonic aircraft, the ‘Stargazer’. Planned to travel at Mach 9, the new craft would be able to transport 12 passengers between San Francisco to Tokyo in just one hour, reaching speeds of more than 6,900 mph (11,105 kph) - eleven times faster than a typical long-haul flight today. Taking off like a conventional jetliner, using jet engines, the ‘Stargazer’ would then switch to rocket engines, once away from populated areas. This would enable the craft to reach a cruise altitude of 170,000 feet at hypersonic speeds - four times higher than most jetliners typically travel today. At such a height, passengers would be able to enjoy a view of the Earth's curvature and get excellent views of space. https://lnkd.in/d8wQEF6H

Falcon Delivery Dip Hits Dassault's 2023 Revenues Revenues last year fell by almost 31 percent to €4.8 billion ($5.2 billion) from €6.9 billion in 2022. Dassault Aviation is working hard to gain control of its supply chain while it targets increasing deliveries of its Falcon business jets to 35 this year, bringing the total closer to the pre-Covid delivery tally of 40 units in 2019.
