Position Summary:

This position is responsible for managing the development, maintenance, publication and distribution of the National Aerospace Standards (NAS) with other team members at AIA. Oversees the execution of the 5-year review process for the NAS library that contains over 1200 active standards. Manages the detailed transactions with the National Aerospace Standards Committee (NASC) and provides support to other AIA standards writing groups throughout the various steps of the standards process from project initiation through final publication.


Key Responsibilities:

These responsibilities will be accomplished through actions such as:


Operational Management for Standards development (40%)

  • Managing the approval and publication process for standards developed by AIA committees; final reviewer/editor before standards are published.
  • Maintaining and applying AIA standards style guide to ensure publication quality and consistency.
  • Providing oversight and direction to staff that support the standards program for:
  • Balloting
  • Registering NAS Standards with the Library of Congress for copyright
  • Maintaining NAS Standards Database (SharePoint environment)
  • Fielding standards related inquiries to AIA.
  • Maintaining NAS Project Tracking systems.
  • Supporting standards development activities and outreach with other organizations.
  • Generate management reports on all NAS Standards activities.
  • Support AIA’s standards development strategy.
  • Support AVP, Standards in developing annual department budget proposal and reviewing adherence to approved department budget.


Support of the National Aerospace Standards Program Activities (40%)

  • Serve as the Executive Secretary of the National Aerospace Standards Committee (NASC) in accordance with NASC Handbook requirements.
  • Support NASC Steering Committee workload via teleconference; prepare agendas, meeting minutes, and follow-up action items.
  • Provide guidance to the committee on NASC Handbook and other AIA policies
  • Manage NASC Technical Advisor approval process and annual invoicing
  • Maintain balloting schedule for 5-year reviews; provide oversight for staff and contractors
  • Manage project approval process and provide working files to sponsors
  • Attend and support off-site meetings (travel required); record meeting minutes


Advocacy & Outreach (20%)

  • Serve as staff liaison to AIA’s Nondestructive Testing Subcommittee; with responsibility for managing one of AIA’s most popular standards; oversees international harmonization efforts for the group.
  • Support standards development activities and outreach with AIA Member Companies, government liaisons and technical advisors.
  • Manage NASC meeting budget, site selection, contract negotiation, meeting announcement/RSVPs, coordination with AIA Corporate Events and meeting hotel in preparation for the meeting, on-site hotel coordination, review of hotel bills
  • Maintain multiple software systems (for balloting, on-line collaboration, document posting, and roster maintenance)
  • Coordinate with AIA Standards Engineer on 5-year review of all NASC standards
  • Collaborate with AIA staff members on development/maintenance of standards throughout AIA
  • Develop standard operating procedures and cross-train with other staff members to ensure team resiliency.


Qualifications and Experience:

Experience Required


  • 5+ years of experience in standards development and standards publishing.
  • Excellent interpersonal, research, and communications (verbal and written) skills.
  • Experience in project management and meeting planning/hotel coordination required.
  • Ability to work within large groups with divergent views to build consensus and unity.
  • Capable of making tactical decisions related to the above duties independently.


Education:

  • College and/or Associates degree or equivalent work experience
  • Engineering undergraduate degree preferred


Special Skills or Requirements:

  • SES AStd certification desirable (SES - The Society for Standards Professionals)
