Pioneering animal genetic improvement to help nourish the world.

About us

Genus is a world-leading animal genetics company. At the forefront of innovation in gene-editing, advanced reproductive biology, and other breakthrough breeding technologies, Genus R&D advances an agricultural practice thousands of years old – animal breeding. Our goal is to ensure the global food system continues to nurture healthy, productive animals that yield affordable, high-quality proteins for a sustainable future. We believe a more sustainable food system starts with better breeding and genetics. Through ABS Global (bovine) and PIC (porcine), we supply high-quality breeding animals with desirable characteristics to farmers, enabling them to produce better quality meat and milk more efficiently to feed the world more sustainably. Our breeding animals’ desirable characteristics include feed efficiency, disease resistance, growth rate, protein and fat content, and fertility. ABS Global is the world-leading provider of bovine genetics, reproduction services, technologies, and udder care products. Marketing in more than 70 countries around the globe, ABS has been at the forefront of animal genetics and technology since its founding in 1941. In bovine genetics, ABS serves more than 40,000 customers globally, including some of the world’s leading beef and dairy producers. PIC, which stands for ‘Pig Improvement Company,’ was founded in 1962 in Oxfordshire, England. PIC strives to make their customers the most successful pig producers in the world and their “Never Stop Improving” philosophy means a continuous effort to listen carefully to customers and drive innovation to create ever-increasing value for pig and pork producers.

I couldn't be more excited to welcome Ben Rush to Genus PLC's Research and Development Leadership Team! Ben will be leading the Biosystems Engineering group in R&D as a Senior Director. We completed the full transition of our Biosystems Engineering department to Ben earlier this month. Since joining Genus R&D in 2023 as the Director of Biosystem Engineering, Ben has showcased his outstanding technical and leadership abilities, along with enterprise-level thinking. Recently, he successfully led the team in completing the Gen 2.2 instrument and the release of the Y-skew product, contributed to R&D strategy development, and supported FDA Genome Science lab preparations for the PRRS Resistant Pig submission.  Please join me in congratulating Ben!

We are thrilled to welcome all 16 of our 2024 North America summer interns as they embark on their 3-month program! Our interns will be contributing to a variety of departments within our ABS business, including accounting, supply chain, and breeding and genetics. To kick off their internship, we put their skills to the test with a fun "Build-a-Bovine" exercise led by Ellen Lai, one of our employees who started as an ABS intern herself. This activity divided the interns into small groups, each competing to draw pictures of both a dairy cow and a beef cow, showcasing superior genetics and desirable traits. Volunteer judges from our Product Development team rated the drawings and discussed which traits are preferred—and surprisingly, which are not! This exercise sparked great conversations and provided valuable learning experiences for everyone involved. Welcome to the Genus PLC family. We can’t wait to see what you accomplish! #GenusPLC, #GenusABS #MyGenusABSSummer Interested in internship opportunities at Genus? Get started here: https://lnkd.in/gQDu5jqZ

Last week, members of the Genus Research and Development team hosted an Innovation Day at the DeForest, Wis. campus. Throughout the day, scientists presented updates on their projects to fellow researchers, as well as the organization’s Scientific Advisory Board and Executive Leadership Team. As Genus Chairman Iain Ferguson said, “The talent and commitment in this room - you can feel it.” #innovation #pioneering

Our highly anticipated article has been published in Frontiers in Genome Editing! The team's work finds that the results "...support the targeted use of gene editing in livestock animals to address significant diseases without adversely impacting the health and well-being of the animals or the food products derived from them." Congratulations to everyone who has been involved with this groundbreaking innovation! #pioneering #innovation #technology

Following the report in The CRISPR Journal, our second paper was published last week in Frontiers in Genome Editing. So many of my colleagues across Genus PLC worked passionately with curiosity and dedication to evaluate and test PRRSV-resistant pigs. In the end, the conclusion is clear - PRRSV-resistant pigs are not different from the non-edited pigs, except for the resistance to the infection caused by the PRRS virus.

Pigs lacking the SRCR5 domain of CD163 protein demonstrate heritable resistance to the PRRS virus and no changes in animal performance from birth to maturity

We are excited to highlight the first of two scientific articles discussing our team's incredible work in developing a genetic resistance to the PRRS virus in pigs. We are proud of our team across Genus R&D and Pig Improvement Company (PIC) - North America. Watch for the second article in coming weeks! #pioneering #innovation #technology

The CRISPR Journal published today our report describing “Generation of a Commercial-Scale Founder Population of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Resistant Pigs Using CRISPR-Cas.”  https://lnkd.in/eKRy7q8u It truly takes a village to bring resistance to the PRRS virus into the commercial population of pigs. It started with brilliant research by scientists at the University of Missouri-Columbia and Roslin Institute, who identified the CD163 protein as the key entry point for the virus and specific edits needed for resistance to the virus. This was followed by many years of dedicated work by scientists at Genus PLC and its pig division, Pig Improvement Company (PIC) - North America, to incorporate the precise edit into the commercial population of pigs without any off-target effects. Rodolphe Barrangou, professor of food, bioprocessing, and nutrition sciences at North Carolina State University and editor-in-chief of The CRISPR Journal, said it well: “This is a milestone study illustrating the potential of CRISPR-based technologies for commercial livestock breeding.”

One of our core values is to be pioneering. What does that mean exactly? At Genus, innovation is everything. We are forward-facing, inspired by new and improved ideas and methods. We value creativity and exploration. This is why we enjoy attending events like the SelectBIO Lab-on-a-Chip & Microfluidics World Congress or visiting our colleagues at the Center for Advanced Design and Manufacturing of Integrated Microfluidics (CADMIM).   In the words of Zheng Xia, Senior Research Manager, Microfluidic Engineering, “During this congress, we presented Genus IntelliGen Technologies semen sexing technology and gained insights into state-of-the-art microfluidics research, guiding our research towards incorporating these advanced techniques. The visit to the CADMIM Labs at the UC Irvine site provided a better insight into the research capabilities of these labs and informed decisions for potential future collaborations with the center.”   We look forward to seeing what our team does next! #pioneering #innovation #technology #collaboration
