Another year came and went... The fourth issue of Women in Ag Mag has been published, bringing the magazine's third year to a close. Over the passed few years, we have been working hard on our content. Now it is time to level up. Our newsletter is part of that, you should see more of us on social media as well and we will certainly be more present at agricultural tradeshows in the future. This festive edition of Women in Ag Mag brings you more inspiring stories from different parts of the world. In our "Encounters", we talk to dairy farmer Kate Hoare (UK), who won the Women in Ag Awards in the "Farmer" category at Agritechnica. Iris, who has no background in agriculture, grows saffron in Belgium; and our third encounter, Melissa, is a beef farmer and daughter of a matriarchy in the UK. We also talked to one of the winners of the Agri-Influencer Award at Agritechnica, traveled to Austria where Kornelia Zipper tries to bridge the gap between consumers and farmers with "Afterwork on the Farm" and had a heart to heart with Priscila, who is fighting for a fair price for cocoa farmers and equality for women in agriculture in Equatorial Guinea. As always, Erica Leniczek offers advice on mental health and Melanie Epp reflects on the powerful women she met in 2023. Furthermore, we look back at the "Ladies Day" at Agribex in Brussels (BE) and look ahead to Fira in Toulouse (FR). Would you like to support Women in Ag Magazine, personally or with your company? Our "100 for WiA" campaign is still running. We could really use your help to further develop our beautiful project and further build this community for women in agriculture around the world. In light of what is happening in the world today, I wish you warm and safe holidays and express my sincere hope for a world where warmth, safety, full bellies, clean water, decent medical care and human rights are not just for the privileged few. Let's appreciate what we have even more this year and show kindness and compassion to those who are not so lucky. More than ever, the world needs kindness and compassion. From the safety of my home to - I hope - yours, Happy reading, Kim. Read the magazine here: https://lnkd.in/evdJUdgz

Have you read the latest issue of Women in Ag Mag yet? It's free, it's digital and it is full of girl power! Let us know what you think!
The new Women in Ag magazine has arrived and it is packed full of sunshine! In this issue, we take you to Toledo (Spain) where we attended the ICAR conference in the beautiful historic center of the city and met Marta Cuesta and Patricia Garzarán, two city girls who went to the mountains for a summer and stayed for love. Today, they help raising heritage Avileña Negra Iberica cows up in the beautiful Sistema Central mountain range. We talk being a woman on a farm, the beautiful but endangered tradition of transhumance and hopes for the future before taking you for an overview of the ICAR conference. Our second encounter takes us to the UK, where another city girl decided to become a first generation farmer breeding an English heritage pork breed. The Oxford Sandy and Black pig have become Lisa Corcoran‘s life and passion! On the other side of the ocean, newly turned rancher and influencer Jess Perigo talks about turning her life upside down to join her dad on the ranch and trying to educate a non ag audience through social media. Jess is this issue’s influencer! She’s French, she loves high heels and she writes about pigs and poultry: meet our colleague Mathilde BRION , this issue's outsider and one of the jury members for the Women in Ag Awards! Also French but definitely not in high heels on a typical day is Laurie Poussier , a farmers’ daughter who decided to change things up and create her own line of soaps, shampoos and skincare products made from… cowmilk! This issue’s focus on mental health explores working with family, a common situation in agriculture. Our columnist Erica Leniczek helps you navigate this sometimes delicate work situation. We all agree that empowering women in agriculture is very positive, but did you know this can actually strengthen global food security? Melanie Epp dives into this subject in her column! Transhumance again in Antoon Vanderstraeten 's latest book review! He read Ilse Köhler-Rollefson “Hoofprints on the land” focused precisely on how livestock, that is often seen as the cause of climate change nowadays, can in fact help solve this global problem we are facing. Last but not least, we reveal the international jury for the Women in Ag Awards, organised in collaboration with the DLG e.V. - German Agricultural Society, in this issue! Meet the jury who will choose who gets an award during the ceremony at Agritechnica this autumn and don’t forget to submit your nomination! The Women in Agriculture award celebrates exceptional women from every corner of the industry, from farmers to influencers. As more women become leaders in ag-related fields, it’s necessary to celebrate their contributions- as the award’s websites states, women are both on the ground as “the initiators and catalysts of sustainable food production around the globe”, and are “shaping agricultural dialogue” as journalists, writers, and more. They’re creating highly influential sustainable companies and farms, with a few examples present in the jury panel- just two are Sheila Zulu, an agronomist from Zambia, and Mathilde Brion, an agri-journalist from France. Worldwide, agriculture relies on women. Of course, we have the kind of leaders celebrated by the Women in Agriculture award, but the fact is that up to 43% of the world’s farm workers are women, as are ⅔ of the world’s livestock keepers (CGIAR). Our ability to innovate and future-proof agriculture exists thanks to the solid foundation these women create. We wouldn’t have the time to innovate without their global participation. With vertical farming, we’re trying to create a future where food security is the norm. For now, millions of women will ensure food makes it to our plates. Congratulations to the future winner of the 2024 Women in Agriculture Award (by the way, it isn’t too late to nominate any exceptional women you know)! #WIA2024 #WomenInAgriculture #WomenInAgAward

Learn about how we're supporting women farmers empowerment at Ujamaa Spice!
Promoting Women Farmers' Empowerment! A recent study by The Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems at The University of Edinburgh made me feel so proud to see how the work we are doing at Ujamaa Spice aligns with this research. The study highlights the significance of empowering women farmers and promoting crop diversity, and we are thrilled to be contributing to these important causes! At Ujamaa Spice, our commitment to empowering women and cultivating diverse crops, especially on our turmeric farms, is at the core of what we do. By involving women in decision-making, supporting community groups, and providing ownership of farm equipment, we are enabling women farmers to thrive and enhance agricultural productivity. There is still A LOT of work to do, but together, we can create more positive impact on the environment, local communities, and global food supply while championing women's rights! Read more about this groundbreaking research and our work in our latest blog post! Let's continue to support women farmers' empowerment and crop diversity. 🌱👩🌾🌿 https://lnkd.in/eg72E2KS

Being a female in the agriculture space is one that I have found personally very challenging for many of the same reasons called out in this blog post. FarmHer and Women in Agribusiness do so much to break barriers, support one another, amplify female voices, and create platforms to make waves in Ag! Cheers to everyone out there breaking barriers, stepping up to lead, and entering into markets and positions where you may be a minority. Be confident, be strong, be kind, and be the future!

#BehindTheScenes 🎬✨Would you believe that the masterpiece you see below for #IWD2024 was birthed from chaos? Yup, the original plan literally disappeared 24 hours to showtime. But fear not! Your friendly neighborhood problem-solver, aka me, dove into the fray, armed with nothing but a Macbook ,an unyielding spirit of creativity and sheer panic!🦸♂️💡 Liz Kariuki calls me her "number one problem solver," and let me tell you, my skills were put to the ultimate test. Conjuring a plan B out of thin air? Check. Turning panic into genius? Double-check. And guess what? The editing saga that unfolded was so epic, it only took me 40 minutes give or take 10 minutes of screaming at Final Cut Pro for randomly shutting down. But let's keep that between us 😉if anyone in HQ asks, we slaved over it for days, battled dragons, and navigated the treacherous waters of the Indian Ocean. 😂🐉⛵ So here's to all the problem solvers out there who turn chaos into art! 🥂 #CreativeChaos #ProblemSolvingWizardry

This #InternationalWomensDay, I find myself reflecting on a powerful message shared at the Semex Conference 2024 earlier this year: “If you change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.” At the conference, speakers like Abi Kay from Farmers Weekly and Frances Evans, a UK Dairy Farmer from West Wales, offered invaluable insights into the sector and its future. As a woman working in the dairy/ tech space, I often find myself as the sole female presence in the room or 1 of 2 women. Female farmers have approached me at agricultural events, expressing their delight in seeing a female Co-Founder of an #agritech business. They've shared how my presence made engaging and asking questions easier for them. While women have always played a role in agriculture, their contributions have often been overlooked, particularly in leadership positions. To accelerate progress, I believe we need more women in farmer board positions. These women can serve as mentors and role models for the next generation and also help those already playing a vital role in their family farm business get recognition for their contribution. Ultimately, it is an opportunity to showcase the capabilities of women in the sector and move beyond the image of a male-dominated industry. We understand that diversity breeds innovation; embracing diverse perspectives brings fresh thinking and innovative solutions to challenges. However, to attract more women to agriculture and technology, we must move beyond mere representation and ensure genuine diversity. Today, I celebrate the remarkable female leaders in #agricultureandfarming and advocate for a future where women hold equal footing in leadership positions, driving positive change and innovation in our sector. 👏 Minette Batters 👏 Alison Capper 👏 Abi Reader 👏 Amy The Dairy Daughter 👏 Karen Halton 👏 Paula Hynes 👏 Luciana Lixandru, Sequoia Capital 👏 Shelagh Hancock, First Milk #IWD #IWD2024 #WomenInAgriculture #WomenInTech #WomenInDairy
