Sr. Automation and Controls Engineering Manager

Job Description

As an Automation and Controls Engineering Manager at Tempel, you will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and optimizing automation solutions to enhance manufacturing processes and drive operational excellence. Reporting directly to the VP of Operations, you will lead strategic initiatives to leverage automation technologies, streamline workflows, and improve overall productivity and quality. **This role can be remote with a preference for Illinois and Michigan. The person in this role needs to be able to travel up to 50% on occasion when rolling out new processes to plants. Currently, no direct reports but will be growing the team in the near future.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess automation needs, identify opportunities for improvement, and develop innovative solutions aligned with business objectives.
  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of automation systems, including control systems and machine vision technologies, to optimize manufacturing processes and maximize efficiency.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and cost-benefit analyses to evaluate automation projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and delivering measurable ROI.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance in the selection, integration, and commissioning of automation equipment and software, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems and infrastructure.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using data analytics, performance monitoring, and predictive maintenance strategies to optimize equipment uptime and reliability.
  • Develop and maintain documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training materials for automation systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in automation engineering
  • Proficiency in PLC programming, HMI/SCADA systems, robotic programming (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, KUKA), and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
  • Strong knowledge of control systems design, motion control, and machine vision technologies, with experience in system integration and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies, and continuous improvement tools (e.g., DMAIC, Kaizen, 5S).
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage timelines, and deliver results within budget constraints
