National Crop Insurance Services, Inc. (NCIS) is a non-profit service organization whose membership includes all approved insurance providers (AIPs) who participate in the federal crop insurance program offered by the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation and administered by USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA). NCIS is seeking to fill a Ph.D.-level Agricultural Economist position. Candidates must be anticipating completing their thesis work by the end of summer 2024.


The primary focus in this position will be on the economics of various aspects of the standard multi-peril (mostly crops) side of the business. Some work on the reinsurance and rating aspects of the livestock side of the business is also anticipated.


The ideal candidate must demonstrate successful training in a wide array of fields including microeconomics, econometrics, simulation methods, and mathematical methods combined with strong coding skills such as in R, MATLAB, SAS, or similar. Prior research experience in crop insurance, livestock insurance, or climate change effects would be desirable.


The person filling this position is expected to provide research support to the NCIS upper management as well as the membership. Professional development through presentations in professional meetings and publications in academic journals is expected.


NCIS is located in Overland Park, Kansas. The position requires in-person presence in our offices for at least 2 or 3 days alternating each work week.
