Director of Genetic Data Science

The Role

GeneDx, the world's leading genomics diagnostics company, is seeking a Director of Data and Analytics to unify, grow, and support a team of Data experts within our Product & Technology (P&T) organization.

In this role, you will work with product leads, engineers, operations, and commercial leads as well as our users and customers to deeply understand what drives value in our products. You will help your colleagues understand what key metrics and outcomes will drive that value, and you will help guide our future development efforts by identifying key areas of opportunity in our current business.

Experience, Traits, And Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in data analytics / engineering / science, in the context of a high throughput clinical laboratory.
  • Expert understanding of genomics data: wet lab data, clinical data (both structured and unstructured), and financial / medical billing data. Deep understanding of the complex operational workflows that produce them.
  • Experience with analytics engineering or development of analytics infrastructure, including modern tools such as dbt, Snowflake, Databricks, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience fostering professional development and growth of team members.
  • Ability to contribute technically as an expert in quantitative analysis, utilizing advanced methods for process modeling, retrospective analyses, and predictive modeling where appropriate.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate both strategically with leadership and tactically with technical and operational team members.
  • Familiarity with business process modeling is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Implement a strategic vision and roadmap for data capabilities and utilization across the organization.
  • Identify key measures of value for our products and drive alignment to internal business processes.
  • Partner with Operations leaders to create a shared understanding of the processes that deliver our products. Describe and quantitate improvement opportunities in those workflows via key metrics and user-friendly dashboards.
  • Build out a process and reinforce a culture where key metrics are monitored and acted upon, strategically and with urgency.
  • Support a team of data analysts and scientists, fostering and utilizing the expertise of each individual while facilitating a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence across the team.

Objectives

  • Operational, financial, and product-level data at GeneDx is defined, understood, analyzed, visualized, and distributed for decision-making.
  • Shared metrics are established between P&T and the teams they support; these metrics are monitored and surfaced for quick action when needed.
  • Data experts across P&T are supported in their growth and united as a team, through shared best practices and knowledge-sharing.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

  • High-quality testing: Our laboratory is CLIA certified and CAP accredited and most of our tests are also New York State approved.
  • Advanced detection: By interrogating genes for complex variants, we can identify the underlying causes of conditions that may otherwise be missed.

CLINICAL EXPERTISE

  • Thorough analysis: We classify variants according to our custom adaptation of the most recent guidelines. We then leverage our rich internal database for additional interpretation evidence.
  • Customized care: Our experts review all test results and write reports in a clear, concise, and personalized way. We also include information for research studies in specific clinical situations.
  • Impactful discovery: Our researchers continue working to find answers even after testing is complete. Through both internal research efforts and global collaborations, we have identified and published hundreds of new disease-gene relationships and developed novel tools for genomic data analysis. These efforts ultimately deliver more diagnostic findings to individuals.
