What is your WHY? 🤔💭 During the annual Spring Teaching Day with Central New York EMS, we asked EMS professionals to reflect on their "why" in honor of National EMS Week, celebrated from May 19 to May 25. We continue to celebrate by displaying the heartfelt stories, reasons for joining EMS, and what keeps them motivated and engaged. We extend our deepest gratitude to all EMS team members. 🚑

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of former St. Joseph’s Health CNO Dr. Janis “Jay” Giarrusso Kohlbrenner. She passed away peacefully on July 6 with her family at her side. Jay graduated from St. Joseph’s College of Nursing in 1972 and continued to support the program long after she graduated. She received her master’s and doctorate degrees from Syracuse University prior to joining St. Joseph’s Health, where she worked her way up to Vice President of Nursing/CNO and then Vice President for Clinical Services/CNO. In her 35 years at St. Joseph’s Health, she was a key contributor to great advancements in nursing and was admired and loved by so many. Jay shared a 50-year marriage to her childhood sweetheart, Bob. Together, they had three children and seven grandchildren, who she considered her greatest joys in life. Our condolences go out to all who knew Jay. Calling hours are Sunday, July 14, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at R. H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel (6530 Schepp’s Corners Road, Minoa, New York 13116). Her obituary can be read here: https://bit.ly/3Lm2SEp

Congratulations to DAISY Award winner Angela Frateschi, RN. 🌼🏆 The DAISY Award (The DAISY Foundation) is a nationwide program that rewards and celebrates the clinical skill and compassionate care nurses give daily. St. Joseph's Health Hospital is proud to be a DAISY Award Hospital Partner, recognizing our nurses with this special honor. Angela recently made a difference in the life of a hospitalized patient who was experiencing difficulty. “I was treated with so much care and compassion, it warmed my heart. Angela always paid close attention to my needs and made sure I was comfortable. She attended to me like I was her only patient. She didn’t get upset or impatient with me when I seemed to need her more at times. She is a great asset to this team and hospital. Her acts of kindness and bedside manners are impeccable.” The patient also complimented Angela’s disposition as a teacher. “She had a student nurse training with her on this shift. Angela was an informative and patient teacher. I was very impressed by her ability to teach her trainee and attend to me with care and compassion.” Thank you, Angela, for all you do to make sure your patients and colleagues are treated with respect and kindness.

In a group setting, tragedies often occur because people assume someone else is supervising the children in the water. Along with close and active supervision by parents or caregivers, designate a water watcher whose sole responsibility is to supervise children during any in-water activity until the next person takes over. 🏊 Source: American Red Cross (https://rdcrss.org/3Limut5)

Yesterday, St. Joseph's Health Auxiliary staff and community volunteers from Nascentia Health worked together to fill more than 800 backpacks for local students. ✏️📓🏫 The bags contain all the essential items needed for school, including paper, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, rulers and glue. St. Joseph's Health Auxiliary has organized this event for 18 years, fulfilling a need for students in the community who may otherwise not have access to school supplies. The backpacks will be distributed to hospital-based clinics that see children for dental cleanings and physicals. Thank you, St. Joseph's Health staff and volunteers!
