Northstar participated in the steel topping-off ceremony for our client, Boston Children's Hospital’s Research building at 421 Park Drive in Boston. The ceremony marked the completion of the final structural beam being raised on this 14-story state-of-the-art office/life science building. This building is part of BCH’s research program that expands 1.0 MSF of research space and provides the core lab areas necessary to facilitate the needs of more than 3,000 researchers and scientific staff. Northstar is overseeing an interiors project on five floors of the 14-story structure as well as providing core and shell development oversight on the behalf of Boston Children’s Hospital. The base building is expected to be completed in 2026 and will feature below-grade parking, new pedestrian paths connecting the Fenway MBTA Station to Brookline Avenue, and public open space. Congrats to everyone involved with this amazing project. Boston Children's Hospital Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. Natasha’s dedication to supporting this cause is truly inspiring. This year was extra special for her because she had the privilege of participating with two incredible friends who are cancer survivors. #ProjectManagement #CancerAwareness #Fundraising

We sat down with our intern, Pratiksha Gade, to get her take on what she’s been up to during her internship with our Northstar team. Pratiksha’s greatest lesson learned at Northstar: “Every project is unique, and even with extensive experience, there will always be new aspects to encounter. The greatest lesson I’ve learned is that it’s alright to not know something as long as you are willing to learn. However, it’s not okay if you don’t ask questions, as you’ll never learn otherwise. Learning doesn’t stop at any age, and it’s essential to embrace that mindset. Don’t shy away from asking questions. You might feel awkward at first, but asking questions will help you in the long run!” Regarding the skills she acquired, “Previously, as a designer, my focus was primarily on design aspects. However, as an owner’s representative, I have been involved in high-level decision-making, which has challenged my strategic thinking. I spent more time on job sites, learning about materials, construction techniques, and schedules. Beyond technical project management skills, Northstar has provided a platform for me to practice my soft skills and coordinate tasks independently.” Read more about Pratiksha in our “View from the Construction Site” series. As part of Northstar’s intern program, our interns will engage in shadow days and site tours with our project teams across various active projects. Recently, our interns shadowed the team working on Boston Children's Hospital’s Hospital’s project at 201 Brookline Avenue. In an effort to enhance R&D adjacencies, we are working with Boston Children’s Hospital on a 31,000 SF tenant improvement project. #ProjectManagement #BostonChildrensHospital #OwnersProjectManagement #Internship #TenantImprovement

Northstar is pleased to announce that Harvard University Housing recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house to officially open the renovated residences at 5 Sacramento Street and 13 Kirkland Place in Cambridge. Both wood-framed structures have been converted into multi-unit housing designed for Harvard graduates and affiliates and have achieved Passive House Institute US, Inc. (Phius) Certification. Harvard's commitment to sustainability is evident as both buildings are now fossil fuel free, anticipated to achieve a 40% reduction in water use and over 70% reduction in energy use. Also, the embodied carbon from building materials was cut in half while the building envelopes are 20 times tighter than a typical building. Projects certified to Phius' climate-specific, cost-optimized standard are proven to use 40-60% less energy while providing a comfortable living environment. This achievement underscores Harvard University Housing's unwavering dedication to green building practices and sustainability. A special thanks to Thornton Tomasetti and Kelly Boucher Architects for their invaluable contributions to this project. #ProjectManagement #PassiveHouse #Sustainability #PhiusCertified #HarvardUniversity

Our team attended the first Professional Women in Construction Boston Chapter Women in Construction’s Purposeful Diversity Series event. The event focused on building awareness around the impact of purposeful diversity on business success, high-performing teams, knowledge sharing, career paths and professional growth. It was a storytelling panel focused on minority-owned firms and their paths to entrepreneurship. The team learned that many who start their own firm are specialists in their industry, but they do not have the experience in running a business. Therefore mentorship and joint ventures have been critical to helping navigate some of the administrative challenges of running a business. We also learned that many of the panelists, while noting the intense amount of effort and emotional roller coaster of starting their own company, felt a strong desire to have ownership over their work and pave a path for other minorities coming alongside and behind them. One referenced a quote from one of PWC’s past award recipients: “If you can see her, you can be her.” We applaud the panelists’ in taking risks and courage to tell their stories. #ProjectManagement #PWCBoston #WomeninConstruction
