About us
Legal Sea Foods began in 1950 as a fish market in the Inman Square neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts. It’s here that the “Legal” name became synonymous with quality and freshness. In 1968, our first seafood restaurant opened, right next to the fish market. The fish was simply prepared, either broiled or fried, and served on paper plates at communal picnic tables. Despite the low-key trappings, the food was second to none and word quickly spread. This early success led to further expansion and now, six decades later with restaurants along the Eastern Seaboard, the commitment to freshness and quality endures: "If it isn't fresh, it isn't Legal!”

Each year during a short window of time in May, wild Alaskan Salmon migrate up stream to the Copper River on an epic journey. These salmon, known as Copper River Salmon, become a highly seasonal catch. We are thrilled to offer our Boston-area guests the opportunity to be among the first in the nation to have a taste of this delicious fresh catch! Starting this evening at select locations, we will be offering a limited time feature entrée preparation of the Copper River King Salmon, paired with Maitake Mushrooms, Spring Peas and 100 Layer Potatoes. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to renowned Boston chef and restaurateur, Jasper White. Chef Jasper collaborated with Legal Sea Foods in the late 90s for a brief time and made a lasting impression on many. He was an iconic leader in the New England culinary scene, especially when it came to New England seafood. A friend to many of us at Legal, he will truly be missed by all.
