"They want the opportunity to live as independently as possible, for as long as possible, in a place they call 'home'—a place that is safe and accessible, and that supports their independence so that they can live their lives on their terms. How can we work together to fix this all too prevalent issue? Read the full story: https://bit.ly/3RZ2wqX

This month, we are looking back at some of the people who paved the way for a more inclusive and accessible world. First, meet Judith "Judy" Heumann. (1947-2023). Judy Heumann will forever be remembered as the “Mother of the disability rights movement.” One of her most famous moments was the historic 1977 Section 504 sit-in that she organized. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act protected individuals with disabilities from being denied benefits and services from any program that receives federal funds. This eventually paved the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act.

At the end of June, Inglis House celebrated the LGBTQ+ Pride Month with with our first ever large-scale LGBTQ+ themed party and educational event! In collaboration with a resident from the LGBTQ+ community, we designed a social gathering intended to welcome new allies and invite people to learn more about the queer community, their history, and some basic gender studies education. Of course, Founders' Hall was decked out with so many rainbows and we offered residents Pride Progress flags, pronoun stickers, "Love is Love" pins, colorful bead necklaces to get into the Pride spirit, and lovely rainbow cupcake array as part of our refreshments.
