Systems Engineering covers a wide area—the entire life cycle of a product. Most people think of engineering as just the development and build phases. However, a product journey starts from need identification, moves through concept, definition, and development, and continues to transition, operation, retirement, and disposal. Most companies won’t expose you to all these stages, yet they all form the skill set of a well-rounded engineer. When you look for learning materials, it can feel like a jungle! There are plenty of resources in books, training, and online materials, many of which are free. But how do you separate the valuable content from the noise? Where do you start? 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼: Don't go it alone. Find accomplices within your company or outside. If you work for a fairly large company established in Systems Engineering, you will likely find a good mentor willing to help you. If not, consider getting an INCOSE membership. You’ll find many like-minded people to interact with and many world-class professionals willing to guide you. 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, INCOSE 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳.
