To be the best in hurdling is to demand your body to do the seemingly impossible. There’s no room for error. Every moment hurdlers make has to be perfect, which requires thousands of hours of practice, relentlessness, discipline, pinpoint control and natural ability that 99.99% of us just don’t have. This is “The Science of Hurdles.” Each episode of this new, original 10-episode series delivers an insider POV as athletes and HSS clinicians explore the science behind these incredible feats of athleticism.

For the third year running, we were proud to partner with The Business Council of Westchester for the HSS Day of Wellness at the Scarsdale Golf Club in Westchester County. The event which promotes healthy activity and mental wellness, attracted a strong turnout under sunny skies for golf, tennis, yoga and guided relaxation. Justin Oppenheimer, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy, Growth, and Transformation Officer, welcomed the golfers and thanked the club, its staff and others who made the day possible. Justin teamed with New York Knicks legend John Starks, Frank Mennone, Senior Director of Community & Physician Engagement, and friend Jesse Santamaria on the golf course. Drs. Christine Yu and Jennifer Berger, perioperative medicine physicians, took to the courts for a vigorous afternoon of tennis. Dr. Jacklyn McKenna, primary sports medicine physician, provided closing remarks at the evening cocktail reception. She congratulated all participants, spoke about the many offerings at HSS Westchester, and expressed HSS’ appreciation in being able to sponsor the event.

Through the Healthy People 2030 program, the federal government has, for the first time, set a national target for youth sports participation: 63% by the year 2030. We are excited to announce our support of The Aspen Institute’s commitment as a member of the 63X30 roundtable to increase youth sports participation. The mental and physical health benefits of playing sports are profound; benefits that have been denied to many youths whose participation rates have fallen since the pandemic. Members of the roundtable are committing to taking actions that can increase and maintain youth participation in sports—from creating safer and more affordable programs in underserved neighborhoods to promoting multi-sport sampling and developing more coaches to meet children’s needs.
