On the second day of the SelectUSA Seattle Spinoff, Greater Seattle Partners hosted a dynamic tour in Snohomish County for global businesses eager to invest in the Greater Seattle Region. Our morning kicked off with the Port of Everett industry tour led by Port Chief Executive Officer Lisa L. who talked about the region’s import and export industry and shared valuable insights into the economic development of the area. We visited the Tulalip Resort Casino for a tour, along with a special performance of drumming and singing. In the afternoon, we had a fascinating visit to Boeing’s City of Everett, WA factory. The sheer scale of aircraft production left everyone in awe. This was followed by a tour of Lyell Immunopharma in City of Bothell Washington. Lyell is a clinical-stage T-cell reprogramming company advancing a diverse pipeline of cell therapies for patients with solid tumors. Kicking off the SelectUSA Seattle Spinoff, we were thrilled to host 28 international companies in Pierce County. The delegation made their first stop at the Center for Advanced Manufacturing at Clover Park Technical College, where they received a warm welcome from President Dr. Joyce Loveday. The tour continued with a visit to the Center for Urban Waters, highlighted by City of Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards’ insights on the advantages of operating in the Puget Sound Region. Our journey through innovation and culture included the Port of Tacoma, Youth Marine Foundation, University of Washington Tacoma, and the Tacoma Art Museum, each offering unique perspectives and opportunities. The day’s events culminated in a delightful reception at Alaska Airlines Headquarters, made possible through the collaboration with Aleksandr Yeremeyev from the City of SeaTac and Shane Jones. We are thrilled to announce that French cleantech company CHARGEPOLY is expanding its operations to Kirkland, WA!⚡ Chargepoly, renowned for its innovative ultra-fast charging stations for electric vehicles, is setting up a 3,500 sq. ft. facility for manufacturing, assembly, R&D, and distribution. This expansion will create 30 new jobs by 2027 and bring in $5 million in investment over the next few years. Here's what we discussed: High-Speed Rail Development: The panel emphasized accelerating conversations and actions around implementing high-speed rail in the Cascadia region. They explored how this infrastructure could position Cascadia ahead of other North American mega-regions, enhancing connectivity and economic growth. Economic Benefits from FIFA and Beyond: Panelists discussed the significant economic opportunities the upcoming FIFA events will bring to businesses in the Cascadia region. They also highlighted the long-term benefits that could extend beyond the event, such as increased tourism, improved infrastructure, and strengthened international visibility. Impact on Smaller Towns: The discussion acknowledged the importance of ensuring that the benefits of Cascadia collaboration reach towns beyond the major cities. By focusing on inclusive growth, the panel suggested integrating rural and smaller urban areas into the broader regional development strategies. In a field that is inventing the future, there can be no one tried-and-true career path. Sofia, a Senior Manager for Capacitor Manufacturing at Helion is responsible for running a team of technicians that build capacitors in-house. Together, they explore ways to produce capacitors faster while simultaneously reducing waste and making the process more efficient. The long-term vision is to maintain a capacitor factory. Before coming to Helion, Sofia earned a degree in mechanical engineering and spent 8 years at SpaceX as a design engineer. From there, she was contacted by the VP of engineering at Helion who told her about the company. She decided to come to Washington to check it out and was immediately blown away. In fact, Sofia recollects, “I was not even looking to change jobs really, but when I saw the facility here it was super impressive. I wanted to be working on something that was truly innovative. That is saying something considering Sofia was literally working on rockets at the time. But for her, fusion energy was unprecedented on a totally different scale. Fusion represents one of the most cutting-edge industries in power generation, and those working in it are true innovators.
