Learn about our latest habitat design project on the Lower American River at the SacWaterForum's upcoming virtual information session. Our previous collaboration at the River Bend site in 2013 produced a noticeable surge in redds (underwater “nests” where salmonids lay their eggs). Join to learn about the team's planning to ensure the same tangible results in 2024. #cbecSHEP Find cbec's project page here: https://lnkd.in/gNdEZHM2

We are excited to share the highlights of the first week of our Youth Environmental Leadership Camp (YELC), capped off with an inspiring visit from our CEO, Mackenzie Wieser, who spent the day with the campers on Thursday. The week kicked off with a deep dive into the impacts of climate change. Our campers explored the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, where they learned about the importance of tree canopies and air quality from the Sacramento Tree Foundation. Day two featured innovative solar bug-making and a visit to the historic Folsom Powerhouse. Campers toured the Powerhouse and Visitor's Center, followed by lunch and play at Black Miner's Bar. The afternoon included a wind turbine-making activity led by SMUD. Our campers visited the Nimbus Fish Hatchery and Soil Born Farms, where they learned about fish ladders, composting, and sustainable agriculture. They engaged in stream surveying and biological restoration activities led by experts from cbec, Inc. and Stillwater Sciences. A refreshing swim and reflection session rounded out the day. On Thursday, our CEO, Mackenzie Wieser, joined the campers for an enriching day. The morning started at SacSewer with a virtual tour and hands-on activities about wastewater management. Mackenzie participated in the Q&A session, providing valuable insights into environmental leadership. The day concluded at the Elder Creek Transfer Site, where campers learned how trash is sorted and converted into energy. Friday took the campers to the Cosumnes River Preserve, where they engaged in a presentation, activities, and a nature walk with the Westervelt team. After lunch at the CRP barn, the campers returned to Splash for a Planning Commission activity. As commissioners, they heard arguments from developers and conservationists, making decisions on development projects. The day ended with sharing takeaways, discussing career opportunities, wrapping up the camp session, and distributing thank you cards, plants, and art collage pieces. A huge thank you to all our partners: Paratransit Inc., Effie Yeaw Nature Center, Sacramento Tree Foundation, Folsom Powerhouse State Historical Park, Soil Born Farms, cbec eco engineering, Stillwater Sciences, Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Sac Sewer, Nicolaus Dairy, Republic Services Elder Creek Transfer Station, and Cosumnes River Preserve for making this week impactful. We look forward to more exciting adventures in the coming weeks at YELC!

💧 Working just as we designed... and we love to see it! 🐟 In-stream habitat features, like large wood installations as seen here at the Lower Sailor Bar site on the Lower American River, provide rearing habitats and refugia for juvenile fish at a variety of flows. #cbecSHEP
🌊 Exciting Salmon Sighting at Lower Sailor Bar! 🌊 Watch as juvenile salmon, easily spotted by their distinctive stripes, use the woody habitat added to the side channel at Lower Sailor Bar as part of the Water Forum’s 2022 Habitat Project. Captured in May 2024 by the Water Forum consultant team from Cramer Fish Sciences during their monitoring efforts, this video highlights the incredible utilization of the side channel by these young fish. 📹 Check out the video here: https://lnkd.in/gvur8FZf #cawater #WeLoveOurRiver

A welcome sight to see snow still at our Van Norden Meadow Restoration Project site this far into the year. #cbecVanNorden
As the days get warmer and the snow begins to melt, SYRCL's science team is excited to get back out into our field sites. Luckily, with the help of some fancy technology, we can take to the skies to see how Van Norden Meadow is looking. As the winter transitions to spring, the meadow begins to reawaken and the wildlife is just beginning to stir. In this clip you can see water kicking out and braiding into shallow channels throughout the meadow floodplain. During our site visit on May 15th, 2024 we heard a variety of birds singing and saw evidence of some burrowing mammals beginning to leave their winter dwellings. Spring has sprung, the meadow is wet, and the science team is stoked for another season out in the field. Find out more about our Van Norden Meadow Restoration Project here: https://buff.ly/3ys4BF9
