Our operations onboard the International Space Station National Laboratory have finally begun! Prof. Carlos Fernandez-Pello and Michael Gollner from University of California, Berkeley are leading the Material Ignition and Spread (MIST) experiment designed to test the flammability of materials in microgravity spaceflight environments. Our experiment utilizes a flow duct, plastic samples, varied oxygen and pressure conditions, and for the first time heaters in space! During experiments oxygen concentrations will reduce and we will determine the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) for extinction, an important flammability parameter. Today we ran live instrumentation tests and in the next few weeks will start burning! I will keep sharing updates! The project is supported by two fantastic PhD students Christina Liveretou and Jose Rivera and a fabulous team at NASA Glenn Research Center and ZIN Technologies (Now Voyager Space). This is part of the Solid Fuel Ignition and Extinction (SoFIE) experiments on the ISS. In the photo you can see a live view of the chamber where an igniter is positioned to ignite the fuel, all remotely operated.
