Don't buy into the Prop 47 fear! Kent Mendoza, ARC's Associate Director of Local Policy, captures the transformative impact of Prop 47 in the Guardian: “It’s one of those monumental pieces of legislation, and it got us over the hill for something we’ve been fighting for for so long. It gives counties an opportunity to be bold and approach these things differently. This is what allows us to maybe save 10 people who wouldn’t have this support.” https://lnkd.in/giPxt4Vw

About us
The Anti-Recidivism Coalition’s mission is to reduce incarceration, improve the outcomes of formerly incarcerated individuals, and to build healthier communities. The Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) seeks to accomplish this Mission in a three-fold approach: (1) to advocate for fair and just policies that: reduce crime, decrease the use of incarceration, and serve the needs and well-being of formerly incarcerated people; (2) to provide services and resources to rebuild broken men and women affected by the criminal justice system that improves outcomes; and (3) to build healthier communities by returning motivated, mentally prepared, and high character men and women from incarceration to crime ridden neighborhoods to serve as ambassadors for change. In brief, ARC is a support network, a connection to services and support, and an advocate for just and fair policies.

We recently celebrated Sam Lewis’s five-year anniversary as the Chief Executive Officer of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition. Along with being an enormous achievement for any leader, this milestone is a testament to the need for more proximate leadership. In the last five years, Sam has used his unique perspective and connection to the work as a formerly incarcerated person, in combination with his many other abilities, to grow our inside-prison programming from 9 to 30 prisons, expand our workforce programs from just LA County to counties all over the state, create a Youth Development department, pass over 20 bills, and 3x the size of our organization to 160 employees and counting, over 80% of whom are systems impacted as well. This is what happens when we empower the people who GET IT most. Congratulations Sam and thank you for your leadership. #ProximateLeadership #AntiRecidivismCoalition #LeadingByExample #HappyFiveYears

One of the five pillars for ARC membership is a "willingness to be of service." And each month, we come together as a community to uphold that pillar. This June, ARC members and staff partnered with @HDAHealing to clean up Dockweiler Beach and, together, collected over a quarter mile of trash! 🌍✨ A special thanks to @HealTheBay for their support. And let's keep making a difference and being of service, one beach at a time! 🏖️❤️ #BeachCleanup #Community #HealTheBay #EndlessPossibilities #ARC #TogetherWeCan #Service

Today was such a special day! After attending weekly policy and advocacy meetings with the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (ARC) throughout my pregnancy, my little one was finally able to meet and put faces to the voices she consistently heard advocating for change. And to top it off, it was while bearing witness to the historic moment in which CA state senate voted to PASS ACA 8! It will now be on the ballot in November 2024! For the first time in CA, the power to end slavery (no conditions/exceptions) is in the hands of the voters! The California constitution currently prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude EXCEPT as a punishment for a crime. ACA 8 would change this to prohibit slavery and involuntary servitude IN ANY FORM! People often ask what they can do to help create change. The answer is VOTE! Legislation and advocacy are key components to activism and our growth as a society. Thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this happen 👏🏼 Jamilia Land, Samual Brown, ACLU, Assemblywoman @loridwilson, @chrislodgson and so many many more 🫶🏼 #ACA8Coalition #EndSlaveryNow #Register #Vote #YourVoiceMatters

🚨 Yesterday, #ACA8 passed the CA legislature! 🙌 We have created a new ballot measure for November 2024, allowing CA voters to help us #EndSlaveryinCA. Read Sam Lewis's statement in Politico recapping this historic victory! “For too long, slavery has been embedded in California’s constitution, forcing incarcerated people to work against their will and face punishment if they refuse,” Sam Lewis, executive director of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, said in a statement. “Now, the California legislature has paved the way for ACA 8 to be placed on the ballot, allowing California voters to help end this cruel and racist practice.” https://lnkd.in/gzwpauH3

BREAKING NEWS: We made history! #ACA8 cleared the CA Legislature and will be on the 2024 November ballot! Involuntary servitude is modern-day slavery, and we’re one step closer to ending it in California! In November, voters will have the power to help us to #EndSlaveryinCA at the ballot box. Stay tuned and spread the word on how you can help us to End Slavery in California.

Such an amazing experience being at the most prestigious conference for HR professionals in the world and representing ARC! We couldn’t be more grateful especially being at a record breaking event of over 26,000 HR professionals yet only a few thousand of them being people of color and an even smaller fraction of that representing re-entry work!

The National Life Without Parole (LWOP) Leadership Council has just launched BeyondLWOP.org. This new website showcases inspiring stories of people who were released after life without parole sentences and how they’ve turned their lives around and given back to their communities. BeyondLWOP.org offers information on the kinds of harm life sentences without parole cause to communities, shows where each state stands on its use of the sentence and outlines effective alternatives. We're thrilled to partner with Human Rights Watch and the USC Post Conviction Justice Project on this website. #EndLWOP #SecondChancesStrongerCommunities
