A new technology that uses light to kill harmful bacteria is being assessed by experts at the University of Birmingham. The technology, developed by Italian translational research company BIOVITAE uses light at specific wavelengths within the visible spectrum to which microbes are known to be sensitive. https://lnkd.in/eCqNDNXu #watermagazine #antimicrobial #bacteria #health #safety

How can the water industry manage rising #energy costs and improve #sustainability through digital transformation? With the cost of bills rising, it’s now more important than ever for water companies to adopt smart, intelligent and automated technologies to lower costs, reduce their environmental impact, and meet regulatory demands. Embracing these technologies is also key to delivering clean, safe water and protecting our natural resources. For those attending, I'll be at this week's NWG (Northumbrian Water Group)’s Innovation Festival to discuss the critical relationship between power and the UK #water sector. A big thank you also to Water Magazine and Daniel Ware for covering my thoughts, you can read the full article here - https://lnkd.in/ekHXm89H

Bacterial contamination in water supplies has been in the headlines recently. Even with monitoring in place, gaining results from traditional methods of culturing bacteria can take some time, so contaminated water can still be consumed before illness from microbial hazards are reported. A faulty valve was most likely to blame for the recent outbreak of cryptosporidium in Devon, but in a small village at the foot of the Pierre Avoi Mountain in the Swiss Alps, the melting of ice was the culprit. For the residents of Saxon, Switzerland, where maintaining the natural purity of their water is considered vital by its residents, a new, automated system has been put into place that will detect anomalies within 20 minutes. Yes... 20 minutes. A system that will switch off the water and chlorinate, so that those drinking the water from their taps are always safe.
