Unlocking nature to permanently remove carbon at gigaton scale
About us
Brilliant Planet is unlocking the power of algae as an affordable method of permanently and quantifiably sequestering carbon at the gigaton scale. The company’s innovative process enables vast quantities of microalgae to grow in open-air pond-based systems on costal desert land. This is achieved without using fresh water, by harnessing a natural process that contributes to the health of oceans and air.

Would you think that burying something in the desert could have hugely positive implications for our environment? Or that #industrialintelligence has a role to play? Let me explain. On Tuesday at London Tech Week, I had the privilege of talking with Raffael Jovine, founder and Chief Scientist at Brilliant Planet, a pioneering algae tech company. Raffael walked me through their groundbreaking process and the incredible benefits for our planet. Raffael also explained the crucial role of digital technology in scaling up this solution. In short, micro algal blooms occur naturally all over the world. The algae absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Drying them using sunlight and deep-sea water and finally burying them in uninhabitable desert regions results in carbon dioxide sequestration with enormous potential. Gigaton potential. The stable biomass is permanently stored underground, effectively locking away CO2 for thousands of years. Here’s where it gets even more exciting. The gigaton potential is being enabled by AVEVA’s digital solutions. The Brilliant Planet team use the tech to collate and analyse data (including meteorological data, water intake, pond health and activity) from their on-site operations in Morocco. This is empowering them to make decisions and breakthroughs at their research facility in London. And Raffael sees immense potential in further harnessing AI and radical #collaboration to scale up their design, build, operate and optimise cycles, cutting waste and improving efficiencies. This is a shining example of how businesses can work together towards #netzero goals. Thank you, Raffael, for such an inspiring story about the might and green potential of the incredible organism, algae.

Great to see our very own Raffael Jovine onstage this week at London Tech Week for a fire side discussion with AVEVA's CEO Caspar Herzberg discussing 'The Power of Emerging Technology to Transform our Planet'. It was a lively discussion exploring the ways in which Brilliant Planet's #carbonremoval technology is made scalable by AVEVA's software solutions. #climatetech #cdr #sustainability #carboncredits #marinecdr

Last week, our team had the opportunity to participate in the AGU Ocean Sciences Conference in New Orleans! 🌊🌎🌊🌎 Raffael Jovine (Founder and CSO) and Toby Boatman (Co-Founder & CRO) took center stage as they chaired a session titled "A decade of growing natural microalgae in hot deserts for gigaton-scale, land-based, and durable CDR". The conference and our session were nothing short of phenomenal! The turnout was fantastic, and we were blown away by the amazing presentations throughout. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the organizers and sponsors for orchestrating such a successful event and fostering such a strong sense of community within the ocean sciences sphere. To all the participants, thank you for engaging in robust discourse and facilitating an open dialogue on mCDR (microalgae-based carbon dioxide removal). Your contributions are invaluable in propelling this important conversation forward. At Brilliant Planet, we're energized by the collaborative spirit of the conference and are eager to channel that momentum into what promises to be a transformative year ahead. If you missed our session or want to dive deeper into our approach, don't hesitate to reach out - info@brilliantplanet.com #oceanscience #carbondioxideremoval #cdr #microalgae
