GOGLA had the opportunity to make a ground visit in Pune, Maharashtra, to one of its members transforming the agriculture sector in Africa and India with solar-powered cold storage and water pumps, Ecozen. Read about some of the company's past learnings shared with our colleagues in the post below. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dbma_5R4
I had the chance to visit GOGLA’s member Ecozen in Pune, Maharashtra, on Friday. Under the brand, Ecozen commercializes solar pumps (under ECOTRON) and digitized solar cold rooms (under ECOFROST) across all over the country since 2010, where the company installs and operates the systems, providing with an opportunity to interact and work with small-holder farmers directly. Today, the company counts with over 500 permanent employees in India. So far, the company has installed hundreds of cold rooms in India, and this has generated an incredible amount of data, experience and capabilities. In Africa, Ecozen works with a number of local distributors. Other solar PV cold-room companies include Baridi (Tracy Kimathi), in Kenya, another GOGLAs member, among other cooling companies. 📉 Learnings from past work by Ecozen show top-down solutions will not work, as underutilization of cold rooms by farmers was an unfortunate and common situation. 📈 Ecozen has, ever since, learnt and nowadays, under bottom-up and ecosystem-based approaches, the company is generating demand to drive high utilization rates for cold rooms. This is translated into farmers appropriating the systems and using the most of it. 🎷 This has been possible thanks to their close collaboration with key actors, such Sustain Plus+ or SELCO Foundation, among others. These organizations stimulate on-the-ground farming associative tissue, providing the right capabilities and collective action for companies like Ecozen to thrive. 🥑 In addition, the company has provided off-takers connections with end-users, hence enabling stable commercial transactions, proving the business sustainable overtime. 🏣 Finally, Indian government provides the right financial services, with low-interest credits and 35% subsidies. States like Maharashtra are intending to install over 400 cold-rooms in last-mile areas over the coming years, so gigantic opportunities exist. 🚨 While digitized and highly efficient cold-rooms technologies are available, the ecosystem under which such companies operate are not yet enabling scalability. For this, more efforts are needed into the collective association of farming communities, last-mile awareness raising of end-users, and sensitization of policy markers at national and state-level departments (as technologies and market opportunities not fully realized yet). Carbon credits for the sector would also help bringing landing costs down and boosting the technologies in new geographies. We also visited ECOFROS’s assembly park, where we had the chance to touch the systems and interact with the technology directly. Amazing visit for which we very much thank Ravindra Dolare and Karthik Govindavajulla, among other colleagues of Ecozen! EXCITING NEWS! The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (#REAN) partnered with Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Washington, DC and GOGLA to host a 1-day sector workshop in Abuja on 'Aligning Sector Strategies with Net Zero Commitment'. Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy, discussed the “Energy Transition Plan and Challenges Hindering Energy Security in the Nation.” He highlighted the Nigeria Energy Transmission Plan (#ETP), established in 2021 with COP26 - UN Climate Change Conference support, which outlines a pathway for Nigeria to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. The event featured a panel session with representatives from the National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment (FMITI), Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cooking (NACC), and the Energy Transition Office/Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL). The session was moderated by the Managing Consultant of Energy Market and Rates Consultant (EMRC). Ayo Ademilua (FICA), President of REAN, delivered the welcome address followed by goodwill messages from the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria (#REA), Energy Transition Office/Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Washington, DC (#HBS), and Just Transition & Inclusion, NESP-Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
