The Social Gastronomy Movement reunion held in Switzerland was truly magical! Thirty-six passionate individuals from 22 countries came together, each bringing diverse experiences and perspectives. We embarked on a journey to Reunite, Regenerate, and Reimagine. Over four incredible days, we delved into our mission, celebrating the seventh year of the Social Gastronomy Movement. Through thought-provoking discussions, hands-on activities, and shared meals, we reaffirmed our commitment to fostering inclusive food systems and strengthening community bonds. What made this reunion special was the sense of unity and shared purpose present in every moment. As we planted seeds, cooked together, and exchanged stories, we were reminded of food's transformative power to bridge divides and bring people together. As we bid farewell, we carry a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Inspired by the connections we've made and the ideas we've shared, we return to our communities with a deepened commitment to driving the movement forward. In May 2024, David Hertz journeyed with 12 Young Global Leaders from the World Economic Forum to Kakuma, one of the largest refugee camps in northern Kenya. They engaged with local leaders, youth, entrepreneurs, social innovators, and people with special needs. David also collaborated with hospital cooks, and all refugees, conducting a social gastronomy workshop that highlighted the power of food in building community. Despite the complex challenges, he left there determined to help transform the food chain to be more accessible, affordable, and nutritious. On this Global Refugee Day, David shares an article co-authored with Neema Kaseje and James Rogers. By 2023, 117 million people, mainly women and children, will be displaced globally due to violence and climate disasters. Food insecurity is a growing challenge, affecting millions of displaced people. The article presents five solutions to improve food systems for displaced populations. This year's theme, "A World Where Refugees Are Welcomed," emphasizes the need for a world where refugees are genuinely welcomed and supported. In the face of increasing global conflicts, climate crises, and political instability, refugees need our solidarity now more than ever. Opening our doors to refugees means creating inclusive communities where they can rebuild their lives and pursue their dreams. Food plays a vital role in this process. As the Social Gastronomy Movement, we recognize the power of food to bridge cultures, foster community, and create meaningful connections. Celebrating True Togetherness on Sustainable Gastronomy Day Today, on Sustainable Gastronomy Day, we're thrilled to celebrate the power of food and drink to connect us and inspire the joy of #TrueTogetherness. At HEINEKEN, we are proud to collaborate with the Social Gastronomy Movement to bring our Worlds Together Campaign to life, with activities taking place in over 16 countries this year. Sustainable Gastronomy means cuisine that considers where the ingredients come from, how the food is grown, and how it reaches our tables. Additionally, it is about sustaining the vital connections and trust built through the shared experience of gastronomy. Social gastronomy is about the power of food to build connections. Through Worlds Together, we aim to use food and beer as a universal language to bring people from all walks of life together. Here are some ways in which food and beer can break barriers and build bridges: 1. Cultural Exchange: Food and beer allow us to experience different cultures in a tangible way, promoting understanding, respect, and curiosity. 2. Finding Common Ground: Sharing a meal or enjoying a drink creates a sense of familiarity and shared experiences, breaking down cultural boundaries and bringing people closer. 3. Creating Community: Coming together over food and drink strengthens the sense of community, fostering a desire to support and invest in local communities. 4. Promoting Dialogue: Food and beer are universal, making them natural conversation starters, and allowing meaningful discussions and connections to form. Sustainable gastronomy is more than just a culinary trend; it's a commitment to sourcing responsibly, reducing waste, and ensuring that our food systems are resilient and equitable. But our journey doesn't stop at sustainability. It intersects powerfully with Social Gastronomy – a movement that leverages the universal power of food to drive social change and foster true togetherness. Through food, we bridge cultural divides, address food insecurity, and create inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive. At the Social Gastronomy Movement we are proud to collaborate with inspiring partners and communities around the world to bring these principles to life. Whether it's through community kitchens, educational programs, or innovative regeneration projects, we are building a world where using food as a force for good is a norm. On this day, I celebrate all the chefs, farmers, activists, and organizations dedicated to sustainable, social and holistic gastronomy. Our joint efforts are not just transforming the food on our plates but also the world we live in. Let’s continue to work together, sharing knowledge and inspiring action, to build a food system that is both sustainable and socially just. Because every meal we share is an opportunity to nourish our bodies, our communities, and our planet.
