Aurora Hydrogen is developing a technology that uses efficient microwave energy to heat methane in the absence of oxygen and water (pyrolysis) to produce hydrogen and solid carbon with no direct CO2 emissions. The technology is highly scalable and modular, units can be installed anywhere there is natural gas and electricity. Hydrogen production using Aurora's technology has the potential to reduce global CO2 emissions by over 500 million tonnes per year.

At the Microwave Power Symposium in Washington, D.C., Aurora’s Francois van der Merwe and Brent L. joined engineers and researchers from around the world to discuss the latest developments in microwave power science and technology. Direct microwave heating is central to Aurora’s highly efficient method of clean hydrogen production via methane pyrolysis — and it is a key lever for driving down costs. At the event, Brent shed light on the analysis that went into selecting magnetron microwave generators for Aurora’s method, optimizing for cost, efficiency, and off-the-shelf availability. April was a busy month for portfolio company Aurora Hydrogen, with plenty to celebrate 👏 To pick a few highlights: ⚛ The Open Hydrogen Initiative (OHI), a group led by GTI Energy, S&P Global and National Energy Technology Laboratory, released an open-source toolkit to standardize the carbon intensity measurement of hydrogen for the global market. Aurora is the only partner organization working on methane pyrolysis, so provided input on this production method. "The OHI toolkit will support the adoption of hydrogen as an economically attractive decarbonization pathway," said CEO Andrew Gillis.
