The Making Smallholder Farmers Thrive in Sub-Saharan Africa project team members earned the Chairman Award by designing a plan to help smallholder and subsistence farmers, who farm more than 80% of the approximately 180 million hectares (445 million acres) harvested annually in sub-Saharan Africa, drastically improve their yields. The team’s sustainable, market driven approach focused on right-sized products, education, and financing solutions to give farmers access to mechanization. It also enabled John Deere to create and develop new market segments in seven countries across sub-Saharan Africa, not only selling more John Deere tractors, but also helping farmers feed the world.
