Next week begins the burning man of aviation we all affectionately know as Oshkosh. In January of 1953, Paul Poberezny organized 3 dozen aircraft builders and restorers in a local Milwaukee, Wisconsin, club that was named the Experimental Aircraft Association. Today it has become the largest airshow in the world with aviation enthusiasts from around the world gathering. I attended my first Oshkosh as a young boy in 1978 with my family. At the time I didn’t realize the journey into aerospace that I was about to begin. Since my earliest memories, I’ve been captivated by the allure of flight. As a child, my Dad introduced me to the world of aeromodelling and RC airplanes, igniting a passion that would shape much of my life. In 2013 I joined a drone educational advocacy group called Drone Media Group started by my friend Mannie. For three years we hosted a 3 Day Video and Aerial Photography workshop in Nelson, NV associated with the NAB Show in Las Vegas. In 2014, I convinced Manne to bring the drones to Oshkosh. Pulling a cart full of drones, we exhibited the technology to anybody who would watch us. The next year EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) would open a new exhibit at Oshkosh called the Innovation Showcase. They built a large outdoor flying cage attached to the pavilion. We would host and perform at that event over the next 6 years. Dec 1st, 2013, on a 60 Minutes episode, featuring Jeff Bezos. There he made a surprise announcement to Charlie Rose, revealing Amazon’s secret R&D project, “Octopus” drones, which aimed to deliver packages directly to customers’ doorsteps in 30 minutes. I would later get to meet Jeff and his family when in 2017 they visited us at the drone showcase at Oshkosh. We let his son fly one of our drones. During one of the summers at Oshkosh, in the Drone Media Groups exhibit, I had some of Honeywell’s offerings from Advanced Tech on display. I wanted to get the word out to the world that Honeywell was going to be a player. It was during my time in Oshkosh that I became friends with Hector Garcia. At the time he was running the Bendix King Pavilion for the event. In the fall of 2019 Honeywell started the UAS/UAM group under Hector's leadership. Hector recruited me to carry on Honeywell’s drone initiative and I became UAS/UAM employee number 2. Looking back, from that first show in '78, aerospace was an unforeseen path that became my passion. It's a reminder that in every career, the unknown can hold the greatest adventures. My advice to all Futureshapers: hold fast to your aspirations, believe in yourself unwaveringly, and never shy away from standing out, even when all eyes are upon you. For it's in these moments that our true potential shines brightest—a testament to the enduring power of perseverance and self-belief. #EAA #OSH24 #Engineering #dronesforgood #Honeywell #futureshaper
