Russian oil and gas revenue soars 41% in first half, data shows

Proceeds from oil and gas sales for Russia's federal budget rose by around 41% year on year in the first half of the year 5.698 trillion roubles ($65.12 billion), finance ministry data showed on Wednesday, due to rising oil prices and the weaker rouble.

Oil and gas revenues have been the most important single source of cash for the Kremlin, accounting for around a third to a half of total federal budget proceedings for the last decade.

The military conflict in Ukraine has prompted the West to impose multiple sanctions aimed at curbing Russian oil and gas income that accounts for about a third of the country's federal budget.

During the first half of the year, the price of Russian flagship oil Urals blend averaged at $69.1 per barrel, above the Western-imposed price cap of $60, up from 52.5$ in the same period 2023.

At the same time, the rouble rate weakened to 90.8 per $1 for the period from 76.9 in January - June 2023.

Oil and gas revenue was down from 794 billion roubles in May and comparing to Reuters forecast of 814 billion roubles.

Proceeds from the mineral extraction tax (MET) rose in June to more than 1 trillion roubles from 631.6 billion roubles in the same month of 2023, according to finance ministry.

China sets up new state body to drill deep for oil and gas reserves

China is setting up a new entity that groups national oil producers and other state firms to search for ultra-deep oil and gas reserves and tackle harder-to-extract non-conventional resources, state energy group CNPC said on Monday.

This is in answer to President Xi Jinping's call for the sector to have "new productive forces" that will contribute to the country's energy security, CNPC said on its website.

In addition to CNPC and Sinopec, the country's two dominant producers of oil and gas, the new body gathers seven other state groups including China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp, steel group Baowu, equipment builder Sinomach, Dongfang Electric Group and Minmetals.

"This...is to gather wisdom and strength to jointly build an industry chain from ultra-deep oil and gas exploration to development to engineering," CNPC said.

China to meet its 2030 renewable energy target by end of this year

China’s solar and wind energy sector will continue to grow at breakneck speed this year, providing the momentum the country needs to meet its 2030 renewable targets six years ahead of schedule, according to a state-owned researcher’s forecasts.

The country will add 70 gigawatts (GW) of installed wind power capacity and 190GW of solar capacity by the end of 2024, said a new report by the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI), a research body under the the National Energy Administration (NEA).

According to statistics released by the NEA for 2023, China added 217GW of solar power and 76GW of wind power capacity, bringing total capacity to 1,050GW by the end of last year.

The estimated new additions would bring China’s installed solar and wind energy capacity to 1,310GW by the end of this year, surpassing its 2030 renewable energy target of 1,200GW six years ahead of schedule.

“Improving energy self-sufficiency requires the further development and utilisation of renewable energy,” the CREEI report said.

[UK] Moray West wind farm connected to grid for the first time

One of Scotland’s most powerful offshore wind farms has connected to the grid for the first time and is on target to produce enough power for half of Scotland's homes.

Moray West, external is located as close as 22km from Helmsdale in Sutherland and 50km north of Buckie.

Nearly a third of its 60 turbines have been installed, and all the platforms on which the turbines sit.

The total project is costed at £2.5bn. Ocean Winds, its developer, is based in Madrid, and is co-owned by Portuguese and French energy firms.

Its power cable has landfall at Sandend near Portsoy in Aberdeenshire.

It has been buried under ground for 27km to a newly-built substation, near Keith, and Moray West then feeds power into the national grid at nearby Blackhillock sub-station.

Raising the finance was helped by Engie, one of the parent companies, contracting with Amazon and Google to supply the energy they need for operations including data centres.

The project involves the biggest turbines yet installed in British waters, each spinning up to 257m (843ft) above sea level.

World's largest nuclear fusion reactor is finally completed. But it won't run for another 15 years

The world's largest fusion reactor has finally been assembled, but it won't run for another 15 years, project scientists have announced.

The International Fusion Energy Project (ITER) fusion reactor, consisting of 19 massive coils looped into multiple toroidal magnets, was originally slated to begin its first full test in 2020. Now scientists say it will fire in 2039 at the earliest.

This means that fusion power, of which ITER's tokamak is at the forefront, is very unlikely to arrive in time to be a solution for the climate crisis.

"Certainly, the delay of ITER is not going in the right direction," Pietro Barabaschi, ITER's director general, said at a news conference on Wednesday (July 3). "In terms of the impact of nuclear fusion on the problems humanity faces now, we should not wait for nuclear fusion to resolve them. This is not prudent."

The world's largest nuclear fusion reactor is the product of collaboration between 35 countries — including every state in the European Union, Russia, China, India and the U.S. — ITER contains the world's most powerful magnet, making it capable of producing a magnetic field 280,000 times as strong as the one shielding Earth.

The reactor's impressive design comes with an equally hefty price-tag. Originally slated to cost around $5 billion and fire up in 2020, it has now suffered multiple delays and its budget swelled beyond $22 billion, with an additional $5 billion proposed to cover additional costs. These unforeseen expenses and delays are behind the most recent, 15-year delay.

U.K. company says its electric car battery charges in just 5 minutes

One of the most common complaints from electric vehicle owners is the time it takes to recharge their cars. In some instances, such as “level 1” EV battery chargers in residential homes, that can take as long as 40 hours. Using a Tesla Supercharger, it averages out to about 20 minutes.

A Cambridge-based EV manufacturer, though, says it has developed a battery that charges in less than five minutes, roughly twice as long as it takes to fill up a gas-fueled vehicle.

Nyobolt says it has developed a 35kWh lithium-ion battery that charges from 10% to 80% in just over four and a half minutes. Additionally, it says, the battery does not show the degradation of lithium-ion batteries.

The battery, the company says, citing independent OEM testing (though the company did not name who ran that testing), can achieve over 4,000 fast charge cycles, which spans roughly 600,000 miles, maintaining over 80% battery capacity retention.

“Our extensive research here in the U.K. and U.S. has unlocked a novel battery technology that is ready and scalable right now,” said Nyobolt’s cofounder and CEO, Dr Sai Shivareddy in a statement. “We are enabling the electrification of new products and services currently considered inviable or impossible.”
