Last week, more specifically on Feb 15th 2024, I completed 3 years working with Procurement at Farfetch - I always take the time to celebrate those milestones and reflect about the past but also plan for the future. The results achieved were amazing and I'm able to see clearly how my team's work impacted the company - this is an incredible feeling. Also, I could notice, from the people I was more closely working with, that they were all committed to make the company thrive - all of them. Of course, it's not just our will that defines our future - there is always the "other side" (market, competitors, trends, innovations,...) and we need to adapt and be flexible to react to the challenges that appear along the way. Another thing that called my attention since the beginning was Farfetch's culture, specifically 3 aspects: 1. Empathy 2. Transparent communication 3. Support In the following day, Friday, Feb 16th, 2024, we were stroke with the news that lots of our colleagues from Portugal will be leaving Farfetch soon - although it was something that we already expected to happen (and deep inside, we knew it was needed!), some lack of communication made this process even more painful. On top of my sincere wishes of future success to all affected, my empathy and support, I just wish that Farfetch is able to conduct this process with those 3 really important and special characteristics that called my attention so much since day one - empathy, transparency and support. 💖

🇫🇷 Amélie in Paris 🇫🇷 I visited Paris for the Bank Holiday Weekend, and as the capital of Premium & Luxury, I had plenty of time to think of (and experience) such brands and of course (as is always top of my mind 😉 ) consider their e-commerce offerings. Diving into the realm of premium and luxury brands is eye-opening. Inviqa's recent study into the DTC e-commerce landscape discovered that brands such as Charlotte Tilbury Beauty, Montblanc, Luxottica & Burberry are spearheading the way with their digital experiences. They represent best practice across the landscape, implementing plenty of value-added features like easy product navigation, detailed information, personalised offerings, and free delivery, leading to higher customer satisfaction. I was pleased to see that Charlotte Tilbury Beauty, a personal favourite brand of mine, came in top, with an 80% score, followed by others like Pandora & Villeroy & Boch. It seems that the prestige category has a lot of lessons to offer us in the DTC space - I do wonder where my favourite macarons Maison Ladurée (of which I ate many this weekend) would have ranked? FARFETCH's stake acquisition in YOOX NET-A-PORTER Group marks a pivotal move in a market where traditional e-tailers are striving to maintain relevance against direct brand offerings. Tell me a story. That is the demand of most shoppers entering any store. Tell me a story. Give me something to experience. The simple transactional purchases are now done online - today, physical stores are the theatres of moments for consumers. This means that every store must be a space with clear brand storytelling. Delivering branding in a new and exciting way has never been more important for travel retail, as shoppers seek excitement and newness which will enhance the experience of their journey. Brands must be able to leverage their established story and experience, but deliver it in a way which is perfectly suited to travel retail. To achieve this, brands must be very clear about both who they are and - vitally - what they mean to shoppers. This is why I truly believe that directly operated stores are key, especially for the strongest brands in travel retail. Only a space created and curated by the brand can deliver what shoppers want – and a failure to deliver this means space is wasted. The Decline of Yoox Net-a-Porter: A Cautionary Tale for E-commerce in Luxury Fashion. Yoox Net-a-Porter (YNAP) has faced significant challenges, including a loss of €128 million in the first half of Richemont's fiscal year. Several factors contributed to YNAP's downturn post-acquisition by Richemont. Initially, there was a cultural mismatch between Richemont's traditional luxury brand operations and YNAP's tech-driven approach. This clash was exacerbated by Richemont's inadequate technological expertise and evident from its frequent changes in leadership positions such as the CEO and Chief Technology Officer roles, which hindered YNAP's ability to maintain profitability. Additionally, Richemont's strategic focus seemed more centered on enhancing its existing luxury brands rather than fostering YNAP's growth. This approach was reflected in the substantial underinvestment in YNAP's capabilities, particularly in digital innovation, which is crucial for e-commerce success. The distraction of negotiating a partnership with Farfetch further diverted attention and resources away from YNAP, weakening its position in the competitive e-commerce landscape. This partnership ultimately faltered when Farfetch faced financial difficulties, leading to a dissolution of the deal and leaving YNAP's future uncertain.
