I’ve been reading a lot about lead quality recently, looking to tackle the age old balance between volume, quality and capacity planning. Here’s my two cents: When marketing doesn’t analyse the full funnel, we put ourselves completely at risk of churning leads, and wasting resources & spend. (And by full funnel, I mean Prospect > MQL > SQO > Customer) A lot of marketing teams focus ONLY on generating MQLs, because their KPI’s are lead number focused, and not revenue focused. For example, Your marketing could be generating a high number of leads but revenue is going down. Why? Why are we generating record numbers but customer acquisition is decreasing? Let’s say you generate 100 MQL’s, and out of those hundred, 5 match your ICP (which are your higher potential leads more likely to convert) Your sales teams are too busy sifting through the 100, while the 5 quality leads lose interest and look elsewhere. And then let’s say we increase spend to tackle the customer acquisition problem, and that 100 turns to 1000, but the 5 only increases slightly - let’s say 10. Sales spend more time sifting through weeds and less time talking to the right people. And you’ve ended up spending more without seeing the results you need. Here’s what I’d do to address this: ⚡️ get yourself a robust lead scoring process. One that considers BOTH prospect behaviour AND one that identifies your ICP. ⚡️ make it clear to your sales teams which the higher potential leads are. Have a rating or prioritisation system embedded in your CRM. ⚡️ watch conversion rates very closely. How many of your MQL’s are converting to SQO’s and then to customers? (20-25% MQL > customer is a good place to start). ⚡️ keep the lines of communication open. Schedule regular syncs between sales and marketing to understand the demographic and pain points of leads - they don’t have to be long, 10-15 minutes weekly should be enough. This will help shape acquisition strategies to generate demand from your ICP’s. ⚡️ change your marketing KPI’s to be revenue focused. As soon as marketing and sales have aligned success metrics, both teams can focus on quality > quantity. ⚡️ start small. Really nail down your target market and focus on learning what gets them to convert. Do that for a while and then scale.
