Problem Solver & Equity Designer | Award-winning Founder & Strategist | Author & Playwright | Global Leadership Thought Partner & Coach | Futurist & Worldbuilder | NYU McSilver Fellow
“… To learn from Ifeoma and the many leaders in this book keeps the spirit of our protests alive and real. If we want more just spaces, we need to do things differently –starting with the way we think.”- Sybrina Fulton. My relationship with Sybrina is special as her commitment to justice has transformed my life and reinforced how equity is a practice of imagining what we deserve, creating disruption and frequently being in spaces with those most impacted. I was a staffer on Capitol Hill when Trayvon was murdered. After I was asked to take a look at the case, I asked myself “what do I have access to, as a junior attorney on the Judiciary Committee to convince my boss—the late Hon. John Conyers—to do something?” I wrote a memo outlining why we needed to look at Trayvon’s murder as a hate crime (with no guarantee it would go anywhere because society does not look at Black death as an extension of hate). I used my G-chat message to co-organize the first ever congressional walkout—“Hoodies on the Hill.” (while facing the possibility of adverse reactions and employment consequences). Our committee held the first congressional hearing on the case—which was the first time I met Sybrina and Tracy, Trayvon’s parents. And coincidentally their first time in DC. I went to Sybrina’s hometown, Miami, to be with community at the Trayvon Walk, where I met Lucy McBath—the mother of another unarmed teen Jordan Davis, who trusted me to set the stage for her public announcement of her run for state office—which quickly transformed into her successful US Congressional run. My practice has shown that committing to equity doesn’t always have a playbook; you often have choose to create it. Thank you Sybrina for this review. I will never forget that your tragedy has changed how we all work. “The Equity Mindset” is available at https://lnkd.in/ezhFADX2 #equity #diversity #inclusion #leadership #design #organizationalchange #movement
