Navigating the Fustercluck #310 Focus Groups: If You Wanted to Learn about Lions, Would You Go to the Serengeti or the Zoo? Ask a focus group if anyone in it has been in one before and you’ll likely have multiple hands go up. These days, it seems that everyone has been in one or is at least familiar with the concept. Participants are no longer blank slates offering raw reactions to consider. Instead, they’ve been transformed into regular marketing gurus wearing their overthink caps. Unfortunately, too many clients let them live out their fantasies, making major decisions based on the opinions of a handful of amateurs caged in a sterile research room. It’s as artificial as a zoo. Have you considered going out into people’s natural settings in the real world to see how they actually live and feel? Well, that is a wrap on a really busy week. I realize we never know the full outcome of all the hard work we put into a tradeshow until a few weeks or months after the show, but there are always key takeaways/thoughts I leave with. 1.) "Some are doing well. Some are doing bad. Most are just doing ok." After some amazing years in commercial #horticulture and #controlledenvironmentagriculture, there is a correction taking place. And while I it makes me really nervous, I am also welcoming it. I am seeing more "common sense" decision making and I think that alone is good for the industry in the long term. 2.) "We need to invest in those that invest in the industry." This was something that the #oldtimers taught me. Invest in the industry and community that supports you. I am seeing less and less of this now and its concerning. If we don't support companies that support the industry, how will the industry grow? If we don't support companies that invest in industry events that provide education, who will pay for those educational opportunities? If you don't believe me, contact event organizers and find out who is paying for these events. Its certainly not the attendees. 3.) "Trust the numbers." This was the basic take home from the talk I gave. If the numbers are too good to be true or or if they are a little "fuzzy", there is probably a problem. If someone can't explain the numbers to you there is definitely a problem.
