In the vast universe of batteries, from the diminutive AAA to the robust D, there lies a forgotten middle child: the Size B battery. Rarely spoken of, seldom seen, the Size B battery's story is curiously akin to certain trajectories in professional careers. Just as Size B batteries were sandwiched between the more popular A and C sizes, professionals can often find themselves in a similar position. These are the mid-level managers, the associate directors, the senior team members who have progressed beyond the entry-level but haven't yet reached the pinnacle of their careers. Much like the Size B, they are essential yet frequently overshadowed by either the fresh energy of new recruits or the commanding presence of top executives. Size B batteries were neither small enough for the gadgets that required AAAs nor powerful enough for those demanding Cs or Ds. Similarly, mid-career professionals might sometimes struggle to find their perfect niche. They possess more experience than beginners but may lack the high-level overview of their more advanced colleagues. This can lead to a career plateau, where growth seems elusive – a professional no man's land. Just as consumer electronics evolved to favor other sizes over the B, the professional world too evolves. New technologies, industries, and roles emerge, often rendering traditional career paths less relevant. Professionals, much like the size B battery, must adapt to these changes. They need to reinvent themselves, acquire new skills, and remain flexible to stay relevant and in demand. However, it's crucial to remember the unique value these mid-career professionals bring. They hold a wealth of knowledge and experience and can bridge the gap between new and veteran employees. In battery terms, they are the adapters that allow a size C device to work seamlessly with an AA battery. Their adaptability and breadth of knowledge can be a guiding force in any organization. While Size B batteries may have faded into obscurity, the metaphor they provide for the professional world remains poignant. Mid-career professionals, much like these batteries, play a crucial but often underappreciated role. Their journey is one of constant adaptation and finding balance between the energy of youth and the power of experience. In recognizing and valuing this middle ground, both individuals and organizations can unlock a potent source of energy and insight, driving them towards success in an ever-evolving landscape.

its almost August and I am back on Linkedin, some reflections to share Having worked in both research and corporate environments, I'm keenly aware of how differently these two worlds value skills and capabilities. In research, skills like 📚expertise, 🧠creativity and 💪persistence are key. Researchers must pioneer new ideas and make discoveries that push the boundaries of knowledge. They thrive on independence and intellectual risk-taking. But in corporations, skills like 🗣communication, 👥collaboration and ⏲execution are valued most. Corporate workers collaborate to implement strategies that advance business goals. They succeed by working well with others and managing priorities flexibly. Moving between these environments can be challenging 😕. Researchers may struggle with less autonomy and more "bureaucracy" in corporations. Meanwhile, corporate employees can find research too narrow in scope and slow-moving in practice. There will always be 🤝 overlaps and synergies between the two worlds. But fundamentally, research rewards individual thinkers 🧑🔬while corporations reward versatile teammates 🧑🤝🧑. This disparity highlights the importance of matching individuals with jobs that value the types of skills they most excel at. Not every great researcher will thrive in a corporate setting, and vice versa. It comes down to identifying what environments allow people to operate in their natural "skill orbits," leveraging their inherent strengths. 👽 So the next time you're hiring or promoting someone, think beyond just their skills - consider whether the role truly values the specific kind of skills they possess. This fit could make the difference between high performance and high frustration. #hiring #careeradvice #skilltypes
