Nurse Practitioner with expertise in HIV medicine, nursing practice, advanced practice education, and leadership
My previous home state of Texas is grand in many things, but health care access is definitely lacking. I am doing a project for my informatics course in graduate school. One question my group is considering is does the increase incidence of congenital syphilis in 2020 (most importantly Harris County leading the way) correlate with lack of medical coverage. The particular database we are using to help formulate our question showed that Texas had over 5 million uninsured residents in 2020, which was probably only compounded by the pandemic as well. https://lnkd.in/gtHRRHc3 This is just another reason why I believe Texas needs to allow nurse practitioners to practice without supervision or prescriptive delegation. Previous rebuttals for granting nurse practitioners FPA (Full Practice Authority) in Texas were that the need is mostly rural and many of the NPs practice in urban centers. However, here is a case for an urban county that is in serious need of healthcare access for the residents. In addition to granting NPs Full Practice Authority (FPA), they need to also consider Medicaid expansion. As per some data reports, only about 1 in 20 women in Harris County receive prenatal care. What do you all think could be the reason for the increase in congenital syphilis cases in Texas?
