Fifty years ago, there was fear of widespread hunger, the problem was producing enough food for the population. Tackling the Hidden Costs of our Food Systems Food systems provide important benefits to the global population, not only providing food but also supporting livelihoods for more than one billion people around the globe. However, food systems also encompass hidden environmental, health, and social costs, estimated to be at least $10 trillion per year, as mapped out in two separate seminal reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Food System Economics Commission (FSEC). Today, on World Food Day, we honor the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. According to the organization, this year’s World Food Day theme is, “Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind.” #worldfoodday

The #righttofood is more important than ever before. We've seen recent hunger rises, requiring our collective and individual efforts to redouble. I'm looking forward to the "Policies Against Hunger" conference in Berlin this June to discuss exactly how the right to food has advanced--- and where we need even more effort. How to rethink what is considered as evidence and valid knowledge for decision making in food systems? And why is it crucial to facilitate the production, exchange, and uptake of transdisciplinary knowledge for informed policy processes? This is what we collectively have highlighted in our Comment Article titled "Knowledge Democratization Approaches for Food Systems Transformation" that has been just published in Nature Food https://lnkd.in/eZp-tahp The article is proposing some key principles for democratizing knowledge–policy processes. Several initiatives in various contexts and locations are then presented which are putting these principles into practice, and it ends up with three main recommendations for food systems research.
