Why do we care about the food system? How do we connect science, policy, and citizens? Refreshing to hear Tom Arnold @FoodSystems, currently Chair of an EU Commission looking to build an International Platform for Food Systems Science (IPFSS), when he talks about what is ‘new’ in food systems research today. Fifty years ago, there was fear of widespread hunger, the problem was producing enough food for the population. Today, the challenge is about producing enough nutritious food in a way that respects environmental limits & planetary boundaries. #foodsystems #foodsecurity #sustainableagriculture ICABR 2022 Annual Conference Panel: The Future of Food Systems Research and Policy Interfaces Tom Arnold @ UN Food Systems Coordination Hub Romina Cavatassi David Zilberman Regina Birner

Tackling the Hidden Costs of our Food Systems Food systems provide important benefits to the global population, not only providing food but also supporting livelihoods for more than one billion people around the globe. However, food systems also encompass hidden environmental, health, and social costs, estimated to be at least $10 trillion per year, as mapped out in two separate seminal reports from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Food System Economics Commission (FSEC). Please join us for a discussion on these hidden costs of food systems and the remedies to reduce this economic burden, while moving toward more sustainable, health-promoting, and socially inclusive food systems.

🌾📚 Exciting Webinar Alert! Join us for a deep dive into food system policy research and development. Stakeholders working in food system policy research and development often ask, “What works where, why, and how?” These fundamental questions fuel other important debates—what are the “windows of opportunity” for reform and policy change? Are biotech crops part of the solution to solving climate, food, and nutrition security challenges in developing economies? What institutional innovations are “best fit” for managing shared natural resources to avoid conflict? This webinar will launch a new political economy and policy analysis (PEPA) sourcebook that offers a unique combination of frameworks, analytical tools, and case studies to answer key questions relevant to agrifood system transformation. This event showcases the PEPA Sourcebook by applying frameworks to case study examples and discussing the relevance of PEPA for national policies and strategies. 📅 Date: October 10, 2023 ⏰ Time: 9:00 am EDT (3:00 pm CEST) 📍 Location: Online https://bit.ly/3RhmsWP Save the date and register now to be a part of this important conversation. #NPSInitiative #FoodPolicy #AgricultureResearch #PEPASourcebook

The #righttofood is more important than ever before. We've seen recent hunger rises, requiring our collective and individual efforts to redouble. I'm looking forward to the "Policies Against Hunger" conference in Berlin this June to discuss exactly how the right to food has advanced--- and where we need even more effort. One guess for outcomes? The potential of #youth is still untapped. Imporant read and reminder to 1) Always check the source, 2) Look for the question not being asked. 3) Seek the contextual meaning. Media has a powerful voice but it some times seems so busy editorialising or just seeking attention. I wonder if meaning is long forgotten?
🥫 New research suggests that more emphasis on individual responsibility to tackle issues relating to food, instead of systemic change was pushed within media, in response to the National Food Strategy (NFS). ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/eSWmz3md

How to rethink what is considered as evidence and valid knowledge for decision making in food systems? And why is it crucial to facilitate the production, exchange, and uptake of transdisciplinary knowledge for informed policy processes? This is what we collectively have highlighted in our Comment Article titled "Knowledge Democratization Approaches for Food Systems Transformation" that has been just published in Nature Food https://lnkd.in/eZp-tahp The article is proposing some key principles for democratizing knowledge–policy processes. Several initiatives in various contexts and locations are then presented which are putting these principles into practice, and it ends up with three main recommendations for food systems research. It was a great pleasure to work collective on this publication which is the result of a very stimulating collaboration with Samara Brock, Lauren Baker, Amanda Jekums, Faris Ahmed, Margarita F., Maywa Montenegro de Wit, Francisco Javier Rosado-May, V.
