So much information to absorb here. I'm just going to highlight this. Worth an in-depth read. For all the extensive preparatory work and consultations done by both #SBTN and The Fashion Pact, companies’ ability to accurately measure and manage their impact on #biodiversity remains far from an exact science. As Nicole Rycroft, executive director of Canopy, aptly notes, biodiversity is not as “KPI friendly” as carbon. As a result, she argues, “biodiversity has slipped through the cracks (despite) the incredible overlap between carbon-rich landscape and #biodiverse landscapes.” https://lnkd.in/eM-wv6Qf

It was great being in Copenhagen with team Syre for the biggest sustainability event in the fashion industry, #GlobalFashionSummit by Global Fashion Agenda, a week ago. For me it was the first time on site representing a solution, and I have to say I left so energized by the huge interest in Syre. As a summary, I believe this piece concludes the week in a very good way, emphasizing that still, urgent action is needed: ✅ Bold leadership is still lacking ✅ Brands can’t keep selling more and more ✅ Underrepresented voices need to be represented ✅ Major companies need to commit to binding agreements ✅ Recycling technology needs to be ramped up (Syre highlighted as a promising solution 🙏🏼) ✅ Having hope is not good enough

I sat down with HM Queen Mary of Denmark to talk about fashion and sustainability... …well, not quite. She spoke eloquently about said topic at the 15th edition of the Global Fashion Summit last month, with yours truly and many colleagues in the audience. Against a backdrop of challenging trading, regulatory gusts and, not least, the growing sense of despair that, as a sector, we have failed to move the dial on sustainability, the mood was indeed sombre. Having slept on it 29 times, three themes stood and stand out to me: 🎠 The cavalry ain’t coming. Fashion may be the only industry that tacitly expects something or someone external to step in and ‘sort out’ our sustainability challenges. In the past, those hopes were pinned to investors (those Larry Fink letters!), then came regulators, and at GFS there were voices indicating AI will save us. I personally think this external saviour complex is a dangerous distraction. Let’s own it and get to work. ⌛ Time for a little less collaboration? Peder asked, ‘when does collaboration become a fig leaf for inaction?’ For all the right reasons, most of us have rushed to join collaborative platforms and initiatives. However hard to admit, I feel relieved not to be the only one with a lingering sense that perhaps partnerships have become a bit of an industry in their own right; where keeping membership numbers up has happened at the expense of progress; where the focus is on defining floors not ceilings, catering to ‘listeners’ not ‘doers’? 📢 Is circular all talk? Circular surfaced in virtually every single session, but where were the doers? It is fine and dandy that consultants, educators, academics and collaboration platforms (the lot!) are all aboard, but things are never going to scale if brands and retailers are not championing the agenda. Circular is the future of our industry. Were brands not speaking up because it is too early days, because the results are mixed or simply because they were not invited? We’d have loved to share lessons from the frontline (right, Ella?). Apologies for the less-than-upbeat reflections, this is not to single anyone out. GFS was, as always, brilliantly organised, carefully curated and full of good people with great ideas.
