September 2, 1998 Swissair Flight 111 crashed just off the coast of Halifax, Nova Scotia. All 229 on board died when the MD 11 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. What many may not know is that this tragedy marked the beginning of the Family Assistance Education & Research Foundation (FAERF) as it was the first time that we were able to hear directly from families as to the effectiveness of employees from various airlines sharing the compassionate care team role of supporting families. Of the 229 souls on board, 53 of the passengers and 1 flight attendant were from Delta Air Lines. Swissair employees flew in to support the families of their passengers and crew, Delta Air Lines supplied 306 Care Team members, plus innumerable Delta employees who provided support and logistical roles. Air Canada and Air Nova also sent employees to help the families. The effectiveness of employees with different identification badges and uniforms blended together as they all wore one badge that was identical--a badge labelled "Care Team." When FAERF was founded in 2000, this model of organized, shared mutual support from multiple company employee, all trained the same way, became a reality and set the standard for future responses. 💡CADRE COLUMN 💡 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗲. As an Airman serving at THE Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy, this role allows me plenty of opportunities to meet students, have great conversations and learn a little bit about people. During some of these conversations, it has been a little surprising and somewhat alarming in the number of times I’ve engaged with folks who have concerns with policies, procedures, or guidance, relatable things. However, there is more to this point, the most concerning aspect during these conversations, is it usually starts with “I”. When did “I” become who WE are? As Airmen, we always value the relationships, engagements, and events we get to be a part of because of one thing, the TEAM! The TEAM is what we are about. The TEAM is what motivates us each day. The TEAM is why I continue to serve. In the last few years, we have slowly faded away from a TEAM dynamic and gravitated to individualism. As SNCOs, we must commit to the fact that individualism must die. We must eradicate it from our force, units, and flights. We should all look to our left and right, even up and down the chain and do what is needed each day for the TEAM. You do not always have to be a TEAM leader…more importantly, be a solid TEAM player. The most fun people have in their careers is when they reflect on a good TEAM, not their individual achievements and accomplishments, but the deeply rooted relationships that were built while being a part of a successful TEAM! To prepare our airmen for Mission Generation Force Elements, each service’s individuality is important to the Joint Force but that’s where the individuality should end. Bottom line, we have airmen with diverse thoughts, capabilities, and air force specialty codes, we can have the most organized, trained, and equipped airmen in the world, but ultimately, we will have mission failure if we are not a TEAM. -CMSgt Rich Brownlee Chief of Operations, AFSNCOA

There is a true disparity and leads to a lack of being able to or lack of wanting to travel for people that have disabilities especially those experiencing spinal cord injuries. My son and I have experienced this first hand. Our family travels extensively, after my son’s injury we did not want to exclude him or have to cancel our family trips. The airlines did not have an aisle chair waiting for him, although I made it clear in my reservation and spoke with an agent when I checked our bags. They had to order an aisle chair so that he could be taken onto the plane and down the aisle. The gate agent was not happy about having to make this accommodation. Thanks to our wonderful PT and OT team we were prepared for leaving the wheelchair at the gate. We removed his pressure relieving cushion and any other items that could get lost or broken on the chair. Which saved all of us a headache and allowed my son to be more comfortable on the plane ride with his pressure relieving cushion. A change needs to happen with the airlines. People with physical disabilities should not have to give up a fundamental right of traveling, seeing the world and becoming a globally conscious citizen because they are afraid of having such an incremental and medically necessary part of their lives lost or destroyed.
