I get CEOs of fast growth start-ups on top of their finances. FD/CFO of the Year at the British Accountancy Awards | Follow me if you want to own your numbers
Why #startups are like climbing a very high mountain? 🗻 5/20 Our expedition company was Alpine Ascents International - it gave me a massive peace of mind being on a serious mountain with expert guides with their track record and experience. They also had a preference to climb the quieter side of the mountain and avoid the busier camps on the other side enhancing the whole adventure. Almost all mountains have well established and marked routes. Unless you were a climbing pioneer like the Swiss Matthias Zurbriggen who first reached the summit of Aconcagua on 14 January 1897, or more modern legends like Reinhold Messner, you follow an established route. Of course we still had to climb the mountain – in high winds and storms further up the mountain, but the route and knowledge where to locate our camps and tents hugely kept us safe and sheltered, passed water sources and maximised our chances as a result. The very same applies in startups. You may of course be pushing a tech boundary or create something unique. From a start-up point of view, it is most likely everything that you need to do has already been done by someone before you. Which can remove a huge amount of guess work or risk or stress. This can be from your own knowledge and experience, or your team mates, your Board, advisors, investors or even just asking your network. – I see this in sales, product, governance, finance, raising investment ... it has pretty much been all done before. For example, you are not the first CEO who doesn’t like forecasting but still knows today what their cash position will be in six months time. -------------------------------------------- I love mountain metaphors and use them often. I climbed Aconcagua in January 2004 and am sharing a few metaphors or analogies about why starts are like climbing a very high mountain. #Founders and #CEOs of fast growth #startups need to understand finance. Nothing new there. It's just an important reminder to #ownyournumbers. You can start to own your numbers today.

As we've been diving into the international migration market for our AI-driven relocation startup, Globio, we've noticed a sharp increase in migration over the last three years. The growth factors are laid out in the slide. The more we dig, the more it seems that, unfortunately, a lot of people are moving to "get away from" rather than "head towards" something better. Whether it's a move by necessity or by choice, we at Globio are here to be your support system, no matter where you land. 🌍 #relocation #migration #globio

The year began so intensely that we have only just realized and enjoyed how many interesting things we have done and are doing since last spring. From strategic sessions and tactical workshops to full-scale business development strategies in Ukraine and around the world. From international corporations to small startups. From Zurich to Zhovkva.

Why #startups are like climbing a very high mountain? 🗻 14/20 Meet Ang Dorjee. By 2004, he summitted Everest eight times by the age of 28 – officially our high mountain guide, his performance at altitude was another level. He carried four tents ahead to our Camp 4 at 6,280m and put them up singlehandedly, all before we arrive, ready for us to fall into. Having someone this good at high altitude also covered our two guides if something went wrong on summit day. All 9 of us still going – he could save a life if needed if someone had to turn back on summit. He could also make up distance quickly if needed. Start-up wise, surrounding yourself with qualified and experienced people is important – but consider people who have been there, done the big numbers, the big rounds, the big growth, the big decisions, the big exits. They are invaluable to your grand plans. -------------------------------------------- I love mountain metaphors and use them often. Most frogs are fully grown after four years, but in our fifth year we showed no signs of slowing, with a 181% increase in sales on Seatfrog in 2023 🚀 Monthly trips increased by 120%, with over half a million trips in Seatfrog during Q4 alone, as more people upgrade, switch and get more affordable train travel than ever 🚂 We're already off to a flying start in 2024, with 158% increase in revenue compared to this time last year - who said frogs peaked at four? 🐸 #UKRail #RailInnovation #Startup #Growth

Co-Founder at Tidon Tech | Creating Transparent Business Operations | Promoting Positive Business Transactions
What an absolutely fantastic adventure it was to be a part of the Startup Club ZA showcase! Our journey into this world of innovation within the South African tech scene was nothing short of exhilarating. Kudos to the event organizers for seamlessly orchestrating such a gratifying experience. Participating in events of this nature was not something I regularly had on my radar. At times, one becomes so engrossed in their own pursuits, relentlessly pushing forward with their current venture that you forget that there's a whole world of innovation and ideas out there waiting to be explored. Three valuable lessons I took away from the event: 1. First, I realized that no one in the startup world has all their ducks neatly lined up in a row. It's quite normal to feel like you're adrift in a sea of uncertainty when faced with the myriad challenges that come your way. But here's the revelation: You are not alone. After engaging in spirited conversations with fellow founders and co-founders, it dawned on me that we're all navigating the same turbulent waters fighting our way through. It's okay not to have all the answers , It’s okay to ask for directions – that's what the journey is all about. 2. Second, the golden rule – never stop pursuing your passion, even in the face of a barrage of "No's". I have heard this saying repeatedly throughout my career and yet I keep thinking everyone has an easier path to success than the one I’am currently on. After having the privilege of chatting with one of the founders at SwiftVee, he shared his tale of persistence. It took him a whopping three years to land his first client. Three years of unwavering dedication, and now they're soaring high, making waves across Africa with their online livestock auctions. It's really a testament to the power of determination and the belief in your vision. 3. The most heartwarming realization of the evening was that the startup community is an open, welcoming place. People aren't attending to pass judgment or belittle your venture; they're there to uplift and support. All you need to do is ask and you'll find a treasure trove of valuable information and guidance waiting for you. The event itself was nothing short of spectacular. The venue set the stage for inspiration, and our host Mathew Marsden, was an incredible MC who genuinely cared about every pitch on the lineup. It was evident that he shared our excitement for innovation and entrepreneurship. I want to extend a personal thank you to Startup Club ZA for this incredible experience. The startup journey is all about embracing the adventure! We're eagerly looking forward to the next event, ready to dive back into the world of startups, innovation, and endless possibilities.
Brendon Mennegke and Meekaa-eel Hendricks attended the Startup Club ZA's inaugural Cape Town Startup Showcase 🚀 . Meeting up with the entrepreneurs who are shaping the next generation of tech solutions in Africa was inspiring. Thanks to the Startup Club ZA team and Mathew Marsden for organising this awesome event!
