Did you know that the world's greatest weed experiment is happening today in Minnesota? Well, every day for that matter. Just when I was ready to give up on my long-held belief that a whole new set of cannabis consumers is lurking (my retail/brand friends have beat me down on this one) comes evidence from the great hemp experiment in Minnesota suggesting I hold out longer. In Minnesota, people are accessing THC beverages (and edibles) at places they already shop at (grocery, liquor stores). In packages that look like products they already buy (like alternative cocktails). And surrounded by people who feel like 'their' people (their neighbors). And apparently the products are flying off the shelves! How do I know sales are not just driven by the legacy/heavier consumer that many regulated businesses have chosen to focus on? I don't for sure - except maybe by the dosage limits imposed on these hemp-derived products (5MG or less of THC). This is not a dose level legacy buyers are attracted to, as evidenced by the fact that in regulated markets this dose is harder and harder to come by. I guess packaging, distribution and stigma are indeed critical factors for newcomers after-all. Admittedly, I've been on the fence about the hemp-derived market. Joe Hodas has kindly let me vent over coffee for months now. I've just struggled with the suddenly imbalanced playing fields...after sitting front row to the shit-show that is over-regulation across USA/Canada. But these fearless entrepreneurs behind upstarts in Minnesota are making a huge difference - and proving that lower barriers, more comfortable environments and familiarity widens the industry's addressable market. (Some regs to protect the consumer - and the market - that insure quality and consistency will still help.) Sure legalization in Canada and multiple US states over the past many years have been remarkable experiments. But in terms of convincing the industry, investors and the world at large that weed is not just for stoners - Minnesota appears to takes the cake. PS. According to a recent report by Pistil Data, more than 220 brands are on the Illinois market, much less than the neighboring legal states. The good news is that the number continues to grow every week. One of the newest brands is Island, brought to the state by 4Front.
