LEADERSHIP IN NURSING In my 3 decades of clinical practice, I have worked wirh nurses at various level of their career....from student nurse to Director of Nursing. Nurses play a pivotol role in the healthcare system. They are the key frontliners in the clinical setting. Leadership among the nurses is essential for their self development ensuring patient care and guiding teams with expertise and compassion. Sone key leadership skills vital to nurses are 1)Effective Communication which starts with active listening. 2)Being empathetic. 3) Ability to resolve conflicts and 4)Adapating to the ever changing healthcare environment. The Center for Nursing Inquiry's goal is to build capacity for nurses to participate in the three forms of clinical inquiry: evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and research. One challenge that often comes up: nurses don't have the confidence to pursue an idea or a question that comes up at the bedside. All experts were beginners at one point! We asked members of the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) Nursing Inquiry Council how they would advise nurses who don't believe they can pursue inquiry work. We're kicking off the series with Heather Watson, PhD, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, JHHS's Nurse Scientist: “Remember you’re never alone in the process, you always have a team working around you. Though your project might seem really daunting, it’s kind of like having an exercise partner, or someone you take hikes with . . . if you’re not by yourself doing it, you’re more motivated. You have someone to commiserate with when things don’t go well, and somebody to celebrate with when things are going well. Simulation improves performance in many settings!

Celebrating Nursing Innovation Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow Anita Dorr was an ER Nurse who found it simply took too long to pull together all the supplies needed to care for a patient having a cardiac or respiratory arrest. She was a RN who identified a problem and went in search of a solution (like so many of you!). So in 1967, together, with her husband, they built an “Emergency Nursing Crisis Cart”, in their garage. Anita’s cart looks and works similarly to the ones still used today, so not only was it a valuable nursing innovation that filled an unmet need, it was also sustainable and has stood the test of time. Collaboration is key! As a nurse, I've seen firsthand how important it is for administrators to understand how nursing protocols and licenses dictate our scope of practice in different settings. Bulling nurses and questioning their work without understanding how they work within Admin settings can be dangerous. As a call to action, the #nursing profession and its leaders across all sectors must ask critical questions: Are we reaching for the future or settling for crisis-oriented solutions? Are we compelled toward a broad vision of what will sustain nursing practice in the interests of health for all or is nursing education and practice becoming more narrowly conceived? I’m excited to share that I attended my first board meeting for the Oregon Center For Nursing last week. We had some insightful discussions on several critical issues affecting our profession: • Nursing Workforce and Turnover Rate: Addressing the high turnover rate in our field. • New Staffing Law: Understanding when it will go into effect and how organizations will be held in compliance. • Need for More Nursing Faculty: Highlighting the urgent need for more educators in nursing. • Lack of Nurses in Rural Areas: Exploring solutions to address the shortage of nurses in rural communities. • Transitioning into Practice: Discussing ways to support new nurses as they transition into their roles. • Improving Nurse Retention: Strategies to prevent bullying and foster a positive culture, especially for our new nurses.
