T- 3 Days for me to hit the milestone of LIFETIME 1000 NIGHTS with Marriott International!
I am a huge fan of SHAKESPEARE. As a kid, I religiously read all his works, 38 plays, 154 sonnets, 3 narrative poems, imprinting it in my mind. Over the years, my interests diverged, but I still have a good memory of his works.
"What's in a NAME? That which we call a Rose, by any other name would smell as sweet". This was Act II, Scene II of Romeo and Juliet and remains one of he most Iconic lines of the Bard of Avon. Now Marriott Hotels have just announced a change in NAME of SNA a.k.a Suite night awards to NIGHTLY UPGRADE AWARDS. Now, you may ask, What's in a Name? In this case, I am a little suspicious, considering past history. Is it a sneaky way of Marriott to say that Suite night may not be 'Suite', but merely a better room vis a vis a better view or higher floor? That latter seems more realistic. In this case, we must pay close attention to the name change because I am pretty sure it means something different.
Now full disclosure, As the WORLD'S GREATEST AMBASSADOR ELITE of Marriott Bonvoy for the last 3 years, I have lived in SUITES during all this time. Never had to use the SNA. Every single hotel I go, they give me a Suite upgrade and I am grateful for that. So I am not personally worried. But what bothers me, is the hypothetical situation and it may hold true someday, What if I was a Platinum or Titanium member? I think by these new changes, I am getting the short end of the stick. The one positive change is that Nightly Upgrade Awards can now be applied to hotels where SNA wasn't available before such as The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C., EDITION, Aloft Hotels and Protea Hotels by Marriott®. This is a positive development for sure and good job by Marriott. But for everything that they giveth, they taketh away. Before Suite night awards would be confirmed 5 days out, now its 3 days out. Anthony Capuano, that's not cool. 3 days out is such a less time, by then all the suites could be bought for through regular bookings. The chances of getting an upgrade get miniscule as we reach closer to the reservation date.
Learn from Hyatt Hotels Corporation. Their Suite night awards CAN BE CONFIRMED AT THE TIME OF BOOKING ITSELF. How awesome is that? Also, 1 SNA award can be used for a booking of max 7 nights which is outstanding!!! HYATT Hotels are the best and I really applaud Mark Hoplamazian for still having award charts and really making the World of Hyatt the best Loyalty hotel program in the World!!
Coming back to Marriott, another change to the SNA which they indicate will be positive will be that 20% more of the room inventory will be available for upgrades. The devil is in the details. We don't know how much of the 20% is for suites and for rooms with view or on a higher floor. What if its 1% suites and 19% better rooms which most likely is the case? Haha. Tony, Do better, be like Hyatt!! David Marriott, Bill Marriott, Leeny Oberg
Go David!!
