Earlier in our series on the lifecycle of warehouse and distribution projects, we introduced some of the tools we utilize in project implementation and execution. This post will expand on that toolbox with some of the documentation used to describe the future operation. This toolbox is comprised of 2 main documents: Detailed Description of Operations (e.g., How it works) - The Detailed Description of Operations, or DDOO, is the document that - outlines all processes within the four walls once all changes are made. This includes any software changes and process changes for inbound, outbound, picking, shipping, and value-added services. - This document serves as the future reference document for all processes, rates, equipment counts, personnel counts, etc. Your operators will continue to refer to this document as productivity and outputs change as the operation grows. -Utilize this document as your “baseline” for measuring success and ability to meet the planned ROI. Functional Specification Document (e.g., What is working and why) - The Functional Specification Document, pertains to the physical and virtual design of hardware and software for implementation. This document outlines all drawings, specifications, and design considerations in one collection. - This document is also the starting point for testing criteria to make sure that your equipment and software are working as designed before you take final delivery from the Supplier Partners. And, like the DDOO, the FSD is utilized to establish that the systems are functioning per the main design to create the productivity boosts or savings that are expected.
