Did you know the James River area attracts over 3.5 million visitors annually? 🌊 Since 2013, the James River Association (JRA) has launched its annual James River Watch Program, which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This initiative relies on a team of volunteers to collect weekly water samples for the James River Watch Map, which helps monitor the river's health and keeps swimmers, paddlers, and boaters informed about the local river conditions. Last week, Timmons Group's urban design team volunteered with the James River Watch Program, collecting water samples at Mayo Bridge, Tredegar, and Rocketts Landing. We're proud to be part of the initiative that supports the health of our local watershed and community. Thank you to our friends at JRA for your ongoing efforts to protect the James and keep our community safe! Heading out to the James this weekend? Check out the James River Watch map every Friday for the latest report >> https://lnkd.in/e2itp6qB #UrbanStormwater #RVA #Recreation

How can nature-based solutions in our cities enhance our resilience? We worked with the Wild West End partnership to weave the equivalent of more than ten tennis courts of green space through central London. Creating small areas of habitat that link to more significant green sites nearby has transformed the area into a better place to live, work and visit – for pollinators and for people. Some areas have seen an average increase of 47% of pedestrians and a 64% increase in self-reported wellbeing. when the next consultation on your local development plan begins, this is the discussion we all need to be having, not letting profit-led developers sing the tune
Fake nature is no replacement for wild spaces, we have far too few of those to n urban places. Although it's important that developments have more greenspaces, it mustn't be at the expense of nature. Community voices need to be heard and listened too, this resonates with the ongoing battle in #Macclesfield to save the critically important remaining lowland pearlland of #DanesMoss , we also need more genuine neighborhood plans, communities should be involved at all stages in deciding where developments should be and what they should look like not driven by money and developers. Our townscapes and fringe areas are awash with the ugly mediocrity of the majority of overpriced modern developments, people, communities deserve better places to live and above all #nature needs to have a seat at the table and be at the ❤️ of everything we do. We are slowly, far too slowly waking up to what happens when nature is harmed and planetary boundaries exceeded.Places matter, we need better community led smaller scale developments, communities aren't created by throwing up hundreds, even thousands of shortlife houses with little or no infrastructure and largely car centric. Communities are made by people. Andy Middleton Ken Moon Nigel Pugh Jane Davidson https://lnkd.in/eFBpEh9i

Identifying opportunities to deliver green infrastructure projects across Scotland. Contact me to discuss the multiple benefits that nature based solutions can provide across diverse work streams and agendas.
I know the people from the Green Action Trust who helped to develop the raingarden elements of this project are overjoyed to see how its turned out. Lets do more stuff like this! https://lnkd.in/ebrkVnXx #GreenActionTrust
Underused greenspace in #Cardonald has been transformed into a vibrant community park, as part of work to introduce sustainable drainage measures that reduce flood risk. The land, adjacent to high-rise flats at Queensland Court and Gardens, has been brought to life by the new park which incorporates an outdoor socialising space and informal woodland. Sustainable drainage measures that mimic nature such as raingardens, basins, and swales, have also been retrofitted on site so that localised flood risk is reduced. 👇 https://lnkd.in/esknwtMX

About 80% of Marin land is protected open space and parks. -Mediterranean Weather: Marin is in one of five areas of the world (about 3%) that have a Mediterranean climate, with mild wet winters and warm, dry summers. - Clean Environment: Marin boasts clean air with an Air Quality Index often below 50 and fresh water from local lakes, reservoirs, and the Russian River. - Water Quality: The water in Marin is soft and of high quality, regularly tested for contaminants to ensure it exceeds minimum health standards. Small, Family Friendly Towns: Marin has 13 small towns and 14 villages. The towns, which average 16,000 people, are mostly arrayed across the hills and valleys on the east side of Mount Tamalpais, facing the bay. BALTIMORE: DRUID HILL PARK POOL NO. 2 Built: 1921 Desegregated: 1955 Drained: 1956 Public pools were common in American cities before the 1950s and most were officially “whites only”. When the Supreme Court declared segregated access to public amenities (such as pools) to be unconstitutional, cities circumvented integration by simply removing the amenities for everybody. In short, rather than integrate public pools, many cities decided to demolish them altogether. Subsequently, beginning in the 60s, there was an explosion in the popularity of backyard swimming pools in the suburbs which were, of course, mostly whites-only due to restrictive covenants and exclusionary zoning. In the name of racism and avoiding integration, American cities effectively eliminated a public good and privatised it for only those who could afford it.

What kinds of projects will the Community Resilience Partnership fund for Maine municipalities? Here's just one example from the City of Lewiston, Maine of how the CRP can help make communities more resilient. Jacqueline Crucet, a neighborhood development planner with Lewiston’s Department of Economic and Community Development spoke with the Press Herald. “Having tree-lined streets is not only beautiful, but cooling and offering habitat to wildlife, as well as shade for pedestrians. We have a lot of pedestrians in our downtown community. The benefits are there. Trees also help with soaking water up, improving our resilience with storms. You just need the right trees in the right places.” (🎁Gift Article --via the The Portland Press Herald) https://loom.ly/EQsbe6w #Maine #Resilience #ClimateResilience #Community #Infrastructure #Grants #Awardees #Mainecommunities #Lewiston #treestreets #trees #CommunityResiliencePartnership #partnership #community #governor #learnmore #communityresilience #resiliencepartnership #communityaction #grantawards #stateofthestate

Land Use Plus Project Manager at Brighton & Hove Food Partnership | UNESCO Living Coast Biosphere Food Lead | Trustee at Friends of Chichester Harbour
If you live in Sussex, please fill in this quick survey. It will help inform priorities for nature recovery across Sussex. I know I want to see an end to the pollution of Chichester harbour and an increase in native hedge planting, among other things! #sussex #nature #localnaturerecoverystrategy
[📢Please speak up and share!] If you live in East Sussex County Council, West Sussex County Council or Brighton & Hove City Council, we need to hear your voice on our #LocalNatureRecoveryStrategy. 🐝 Our region is home to wondrous and iconic wildlife, including internationally rare habitats and species.
