In a recent article, Nicole Goodkind, Senior Business Reporter at CNN, points out, “A new national stock exchange, based in Dallas and backed by Wall Street heavyweights like BlackRock and Citadel Securities, is looking to take on the world-famous New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.” TXSE Group intends to alleviate regulatory burdens by offering more stable and predictable listing standards. Their goal is to expand access to U.S. capital markets for all investors, particularly businesses in Texas and the southeast. TXSE aims to attract the region's 5,200 private equity-sponsored companies that are considering going public, with an official launch planned for 2026. Last year, I predicted that 40% of PE firms would go out of business over the next few years. It has already started, and Bloomberg is calling those firms who aren't making it: Zombie funds. When the economy was soaring and debt was cheap, new PE firms were launching left and right. Everyone was jumping on the bandwagon, and like any industry that gets overcrowded, traditional PE soon became commoditized. Most everyone was running the same playbook; valuations went up and returns went down. And just like in any mature industry, margins become squeezed (lower returns in the case of PE), and it gets tougher and tougher for the "me toos" to survive. Underperformers go out of business and those who get enough scale are the only ones who can keep going in the traditional model. (Think Blackstone, Apollo, KKR, etc.) Like in most maturing industries, the best way to maintain "margins" (investor performance) and generate growth is to find new ways to be different. This is how Tide Rock continues to grow and generate returns. Our unique model is unlevered and drives quarterly yield, and we do it with a team that specializes in operational excellence, not financial engineering. As a result, we grow our portfolio companies 36% per year on average. We hear from more investors every day who have realized the old model isn't going to work for them anymore. The smartest allocators are the ones who have embraced the niche firms that are truly doing something different. Because if they're not, the "margins" will go away, and sooner or later these funds will just be running around in a dead body. #unleveredbuyout
