And we're back with another episode of Calling Operator; let's dive into a bit of a storytime for this episode... This episode was recorded pre-Grapevine, at a point when I was feeling deflated by the entire ecosystem. I wasn't even sure if I believed in the podcast anymore. Did I want to release an episode about encouraging women to enter tech and startups when I wasn’t sure it was great advice? During this period, my guest was Nicole Meaker, someone I not only greatly respect but also someone whose story I had eagerly anticipated sharing for quite some time. So, thankfully, we recorded this episode. I’m so grateful we did because it turned out to be one of the most inspiring stories I've had the honour to share. However, I was nervous about releasing it because, as mentioned, this was pre-Grapevine. Listening back, I felt I came across as lacking compassion, but in reality, I was grappling with feelings of hopelessness, frustration, and maybe... avoidance? But, if anything, this episode further underscores the importance of The Grapevine. Nicole shares a narrative that is, regrettably, becoming too common. Her story ranges from an account of sexual assault to dismissive penalties of said assault, 'locker room' talk and even experiences of being taken to strip clubs with work colleagues, supposedly because they were the only places open. But thankfully, that’s not the entirety of her story or the episode. What I love most about this episode are the parts about someone who, without female role models or even known narratives, chose to study engineering as an adult. Someone who has found exactly what they want from their career. Someone who has challenged their own perspectives admits that juggling a career with parenthood is tough but makes you better at both. So, while my reactions might differ if this were recorded today, it remains an incredible story of a phenomenal woman I am proud to watch grow in their career and contribute to the change we all strive for in this ecosystem. 2024 is going to be a good year, you guys. I can feel it.
🥂 New Year, New Episode, New Look - It's all happening 💥 Kicking off the year with an absolute BANGER, I'm thrilled to introduce Nicole Meaker to the pod, Product Manager at Marqo. 🦏 In this episode, Nicole takes us through her 20-year journey in tech. From her mid-20s decision to study engineering to carving out her niche in the startup world and becoming the first PM at Marqo - a search engine that lets you search the way you think. Her story brilliantly demonstrates adaptability and the importance of continuous learning in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. But Nicole's journey isn't just about tech. She delves into the challenges of navigating technical roles in predominantly male spaces and her experiences building a career and grappling with what her niche is (spoiler alert, she found it). 🌍 Key takeaways from our chat: 🩷 Focus on what's in front of you, not just where you're heading. 💛 Technology is really just a tool to solve problems. 💚 How being engaged in a job you love makes you a better parent. ❤️ The importance of taking a break and giving yourself permission to think broadly about your experiences Dive into Nicole's journey and pick up some nuggets of wisdom along the way.
