A Lesson from 'The Bear' 🐻 During a binge-watch session of 'The Bear' last week, I was fascinated by one character, Tina - an older Latina chef. Years of monotonous work in a greasy Chicago restaurant kitchen left Tina unnoticed, her skills unrefined, and her attitude, understandably, tinged with indignance. But the new Michelin-trained owner and another chef recognize untapped potential in Tina. They send her to culinary school. An act of faith and trust not many would dare. But this act transcended mere skill development. It shattered the barriers of her fear and insecurity, igniting a renewed confidence.🔥 I can't stop thinking about Tina, and others like her. We've all seen and experienced the transformative power of belief. When someone believes in you, it's like a light is turned on in a room you didn't even know was dark. 💡 Who in your orbit is like Tina? Re-sharing this post from my friend, René Siegel 🙋🏻♀️, for two big reasons: First, I had a call this morning with someone who "accidentally" stumbled into their career. They went to school for music (Jazz, specifically), and as they neared graduation, began to really confront the fact that it's hard work to make a living in music. To help bridge the gap, they took a night shift customer support role. As time went on there, a colleague noticed that this person was doing more than just answering phones.. they'd been able to do a variety of things on their computer (a dummy terminal of the time) that many other folks never did. The colleague said, in essence: "I notice that you're able to do much more with that computer than most. Any interest in joining my team? You can keep your night shift role, but focus on operations and continue learning more about computers and programing." Long story short: this individual went on to build an enviable career across engineering, product management, and business development. And all because someone "noticed." I still remember when (a very long time ago 🤣), René noticed something about me. I had shared one of my first "official" resumes and cover letters with her as I was nearing my college graduation, and I had taken some liberties on the cover letter specifically. Not sure how it would be received, I remember so vividly Rene telling me it was one of the most authentic cover letters she'd ever read. Her noticing that detail meant the world to me and was one of the earliest signs for me that perhaps story telling could be a meaningful part of my career. Fast forward to today: I believe in my core that stories are one of the most powerful tools we can all use to get where we want to be. Who will you notice today? And more importantly, what will you do about it?

Listen to your team. Look for inspiration in unexpected places. A story from Blue Smoke... Every January, we closed Blue Smoke for a few days to take a break and throw our staff holiday party. On the last day of the break, I would convene the leadership team for a day-long strategy session. It was my favorite day of the year because it took us out of our space and helped us see one another as equals. No uniforms, no hierarchy. Just bonding, relationship building, thinking, and fun. We each had assignments, and each person had to present an idea or challenge to tackle as a group. We were a motley crew of 20 leaders with 20 different perspectives, and the discussions could get passionate. The only rule was that each person had to listen and that we had to respect one another’s point of view. A person's job description or rank was irrelevant. At the end of the day, we would agree to five goals for the year ahead and commit to moving the goal forward based on our role. At one year’s offsite, our pastry chef, Jennifer Giblin, presented: “I don’t know why we cannot increase our revenue by one million dollars this year. I believe we should be able to, and we owe it to ourselves to achieve the goal.” She went on to describe the steps it would take to achieve the goal. The room fell silent. This was the pastry chef! In the world of restaurants, pastry chefs are not known to push the financial envelope. Then, slowly but surely, individuals chimed in with their support. By the end of the day, this audacious goal had become our mission for the year ahead. I have never seen a singular idea, from an unlikely source, galvanize a team so powerfully. To this day, that offsite is a career highlight. On Monday, I will share what we did that year to chase our goal, and how we performed. 🍸 What job did you do in your early days that prepped you for being amazing at what you do today? 🥃 I spent 10 years in the restaurant industry as a bartender and server in fine dining and let me tell you...you learn a lot about people when you control the destiny of their food and booze 😎 I credit my experience in restaurants to my success as a People leader all the time. It taught me how to uncover a person's motivators, it taught me to be a mediator and problem solver, it taught me business principles and was the catalyst for me getting my business degree. Chipotle: Webster Tx. Have you ever wondered if the employees featured in TV commercials are actual employees or perhaps actors? Me too. Today, at one of my favorite place for lunch, I met Christina - the manager and actual Chipotle employee who's featured in a recent commercial. In our brief conversation, I mentioned how awesome it must be the face of a franchise and asked if this was something she applied for, volunteered to, or was asked to do?! She said her boss helped push her name through the process, but wasn't sure she'd get the opportunity because of - in her own words, an occasional stutter. As an affirmation, I said the commercial was spot on and she was great! I even doubled down by sharing that some of the most influential people we know - had an occasional stutter. ... the likes of Ed Sheeran to Elvis, Kendrick Lamar to the voice of the The Lion King, even in biblical terms for Moses who went to the Pharaoh. What a nice reminder of a modern miracle, in my opinion. - Disfluencies won't keep us from being an influence. - Opportunities are abound. - The value of seeing greatness in others, and to help see them through.
