The European Defense & Security Summit 2024 attended last Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the President of the Association of Hellenic Aerospace Security & Defense Companies (HASDIG) Mr. Nikolaos Papatsas.
The Summit took place in Brussels and was co-organized by Aerospace and Defense Industries Association of Europe (ASD) and European Business Summits.
The Brussels summit brought together 400 representatives and leaders from EU institutions and services, national governments, NATO, defense industry, academia and the media to discuss the security and defense issues facing Europe.
The central issue of the Summit was the industrial dimension of European security, and more specifically the parameter of the European defense industry, essentially looking at how Europe can face the security challenges of today and tomorrow, and the key role of European industry in dealing with them.
During the summit participants discussed Europe's defense support for Ukraine to successfully cope with the war with Russia, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke of the need to create a strong European defense technological and industrial base in a world that has turned to open confrontation.
As President Ursula von der Leyen pointed out, “It is time for a European defense and security awakening. Our freedom and prosperity depend on our security. And we must align our actions with the changing security environment."
The CEOs and representatives of European defense industries, and ASD reinforced the industry's commitment to increase industrial production and analyzed to what extent the defense industry has already done so. However, they stressed the critical importance of forward-looking forecasts and increased order volumes to maintain the investments that have been made and ensure the long-term economic viability of the European defense industry.
