"The best U.S. cities for landing an internship - Which city college graduates move to after leaving school is a big decision. One factor that plays a part in that decision is the cost of living; one in three students, for instance, plans to move to a cheaper city after graduation. Another consideration is what the local job market looks like for budding interns. Considering that it’s the most popular city for graduate job hunters, it comes as no surprise that New York is the most competitive city in which to apply for an internship, with the average role on LinkedIn attracting 10.28 daily applicants. In a country where 47% of interns aren’t paid at all, it’s an obvious draw that particular interns in the Big Apple can earn nearly $20,000 a month."

Yesterday, I had the amazing opportunity to participate in an online Q&A with employees from Mojang Studios and Microsoft. It was my first time hearing directly from people within the Big Tech community, and it was incredibly insightful. They shared their experiences and advice for aspiring game developers and tech professionals, especially those interested in internships. Two key takeaways stuck out to me: ·       The Power of Diversity: One point that really resonated with me was the emphasis on diversity in tech teams. It makes perfect sense when you consider the global audience for games like Minecraft. Players come from all walks of life, with diverse ethnicities, cultures, sexual orientations, and abilities. To create a product that resonates with such a broad player base, a diverse team is essential. ·       Resume Revamp: Gone are the days of lengthy resumes that chronicle your entire life story. Recruiters are laser-focused on identifying relevant skills and experiences that align with the position. RJ Hayes, a Technical University Recruiter at Microsoft, emphasized the importance of a concise one-page resume. Think of your LinkedIn profile as an extension of your resume, where you can showcase your accomplishments and interests in more detail. Huge shoutout to the Hispanic Heritage Foundation for hosting this insightful event, and to Mojang and Microsoft for sharing their valuable perspectives! This Q&A was a goldmine of information for aspiring game developers, software engineers, and product managers. hey besties, here’s my last post of 2023 💌 Like so many others have, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the wins I earned this year. They include: 🥖 Studying abroad in Paris, France and writing a 14 page paper in French by the end of the semester 👩🏾💻 Securing a summer internship at Uber 🚆 Planning, funding, and experiencing two weeks of solo travel around Europe, a trip that included 9 cities in 4 different countries 🫱🏾🫲🏾 Growing my technical and professional skills at Uber through the incredible people I met, the intern projects that pushed me past my comfort zone, and getting to produce and edit a video for their National Intern’s Day campaign (+ getting a return offer!) 💰 Returning back to Princeton University’s campus and declaring an entrepreneurship minor 📅 Showing up on a daily and weekly basis for my internship recruiting process and collecting data on my progress ⭕ Landing a summer 2024 internship at Apple 💁🏾♀️ Posting content on LinkedIn consistently for the last 20 days, getting hundreds of thousands of impressions, and helping my peers navigate their tech recruiting processes Now, this post wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the L’s that 2023 brought. They include: 🙅🏾♀️ Getting into some sketchy hostel situations while solo-traveling and almost missing my flight out of Paris back to the US 🤡 Taking an in-person University of California, Berkeley course while doing my Uber internship (worst idea of my life) 🫥 Struggling to readjust back to life at Princeton University and trying to figure out who my friends are 😭Almost failing out of my CS major (ngl studying abroad as a CS major has drawbacks) 🛌🏾 Being burnt out from pushing myself a little too hard with recruiting I’m infinitely grateful for all the lessons I’ve learned in 2023. Allah really showed up for me this year. This has been a year for the books. I hope 2024 finds us all well-rested, well-moisturized, and well-paid. I hope 2024 is kind, in every sense of the word. Note to self: If you don’t want the prize, don’t play the game 👏🏾 Many of us play the internship search game because we want the prize. For example, months of searching led me to an Apple internship offer. 🍎 After the recruiter’s call, an immense sense of accomplishment washed over me, making everything else that evening irrelevant. Despite the fact that I haven’t yet completed the internship or stepped foot in Cupertino, I felt a sense of success. 🏅 Reflecting, I realized I didn’t just win an internship, I earned a title. Putting “Incoming SWE Intern @ Apple” in my LinkedIn headline is a prize I can access before the internship even begins. 💎 A core idea from “Finite and Infinite Games” is precisely this: what one wins at the end of a finite game is a title. With this broader idea of prizes and titles, you can also work backwards. When invited to a new game (responsibility, opportunity, etc), I ask myself: “Do I want the prize?” 🤔 If not, then I don’t play the game 🤷🏾♀️ If your career had a bucket list, what title or role would be at the top?
