Yesterday, I was proud to be a part of the launch of SIBA, The Society of Independent Brewers and Associates Independent Beer Report. As a business, we have been supporting SIBA and independent breweries for many years, and I am glad to see overall beer numbers returning to pre-pandemic levels. Craft is back it seems, even if at a more granular level, there are changes in the mix of beer sold. As the report tells, there is still a lot of work to be done! The UK beer industry is a huge part of our culture in the UK, with the role of the local pub often mis-understood and valued. The role of independent brewers is also still undervalued - I wonder how much of our spend in a pub stays local when spent in a local pub, drinking local beer, rather than drinking in a large pub chain, drinking global brands. The Business of Beer Coming from the home of Guinness, a brand that is synonymous with Ireland, we Irish have an appreciation of beer being part of a national identity: think Heineken and Carlsberg as being associated with their home countries, also. But the brewing industry is much more complex than that, with major corporations holding a multitude of national and international brands. So where does a national brewery such as Bofferding fit? How does it compare with the many local and regional brewers in Germany, for example? Where does it sit vis a vis the craft beers and micro-breweries? What are the challenges - quality raw materials, water purity and distribution to name but a few? The U.S. is a country that overwhelmingly consumes beer 🍺 at home rather than at bars, a trend that’s strengthening despite people mostly shrugging off pandemic-related concerns about dining and drinking out. In 2021, some predicted that pent-up demand would create a boom in draft beer, yet the last two years have proven the opposite. Through May this year, U.S. and imported keg beer volume has been down roughly -20% compared to 2019 levels. “Draft beer is not really recovering anymore,” Brewers Association (BA) chief economist Bart Watson said during a midyear industry report in August. Draft beer’s worse-than-expected slump has ripple effects for breweries and bars, who lose out on the higher margins that draft beer offers compared to packaged beer. The decline in draught volumes may also reflect changing consumer consumption, especially amongst Gen Z consumers, with a shift towards, spirts, RTD seltzers and cocktail formats and the growth of low and no alcohol category. Stout popularity soars to make it Britain’s fastest growing beer! Stout has become so popular again that it is now the fastest growing beer variety in the UK. In the last year volume demand for the malty, full-bodied, dark beer with a creamy head has grown by 35% at Tesco. Historically, Irish stout, including Guinness, dominated the British beer market for well over a century, but towards the end of the 20th century it saw a decline in popularity because of the arrival, from Europe, of lager. It’s back in demand now with a wide variety of craft brewers bringing some interesting beers with real character and a whole variety of flavours to market. Brew Dog’s stout, Black Heart, is Tesco’s most popular after Guinness. In the UK, Guinness is becoming the best-selling beer in both the on-trade (bars and pubs) and off-trade (retail) markets. The date a beer was brewed or released was not a factor. - One user, one vote per beer! If a user rated a given beer multiple times in 2023, only the final check-in with a rating counted. - For a beer to qualify, it must have received at least 50 check-ins from 50 unique Untappd community members in 2023. - For a substyle to qualify for the Community Awards, there must have been at least 3 qualifying beers in the substyle in the selected geography in 2023. - Beers qualify based on the brewery’s primary location, not the location of the check-ins, user, etc. - Importantly, Untappd team members had no subjective input on these awards. No brewers received preferential treatment. The only criteria were the objective metrics outlined above based on the ratings of Untappd community members all around the world.

According to a report by YouGov and a Beer Rating App the top 10 selling beers in the UK only have a rating of 3.12 / 5! That's less than 65%! 👎 Surely if a Beer was to be a top seller we would expect it to be closer to 4 at least? The only one close on the list is GUINESS. Why do people in the UK drink mediocre beer? Is it because these beers are easier to purchase? Do people not know where to look to find great beer? Or are these scores lower than the true opinion of the beers? Great News The Swedes love a bit of Welsh! HO HO HO our Christmas ale is out selling last year's record sales figures, and we are now selling in 72% of the State-owned off-licenses across Sweden. Well done to our partners in Sweden. So what is next, ZERO CRAFT BEERS, as I read each week about who is the biggest in the game here in Wales I have to ask how you can be the biggest when your brewery is not even joined up. What matters is that you brew great beer and the Zero market is dominated by stunted fermentations, and beers of little style, and little attraction. When someone produces a great one, it will be a winner. We have worked hard to pioneer a great new process, and very shortly Zero beers that will rock your boat! Flavor, quality, award-winning, well let's not be presumptive at this stage but I have a feeling... beers for which there are already indicative orders of 2 million bottles for the Far East. Kegs for Europe and the major independent wholesalers.
