One of our favorite partnerships is with the urban farm students at Mid City High School in Davenport. Every time we visit, we are impressed by their agricultural knowledge and environmental thoughtfulness. These students are not just learning about farming, they are growing into compassionate, responsible adults who care about their community and the environment! We are happy to be a part of their journey and to witness their hard work firsthand. We're grateful for not only the tangible help they give, but also for letting us be a part of their own growing process! Together, we're nurturing the future leaders of our community and beyond. 📚 💚 🌻

This week, I am celebrating all the milestones achieved such as: 🗓️ Programs: submitted a 100 page grant. 📚Products: wrapped up a facilitator manual and curriculum for young adults which will be piloted next week at a retreat in Colorado. 📝People: wrapped up leadership track delivered to 110 organizations in the nation delivered across 4 cities split into 4 cohorts. How did we manage to do all this and more? ✔️ A strategy to cross-train and build others - asking myself how can I sell my job? What am I doing that I can train others to do? How can I build the capacity of others instead of holding on to things? ✔️ Investing in the team through professional development trainings and intentionally working on building a positive organizational culture. When people trust, they lean in and engage. Ask people to participate - for me it involves volunteers, staff, businesss community, board members- all hands on deck. ✔️ Supportive family. While we travelled across the nation delivering trainings, the hubby stepped up with the kids. In this picture, the family travelled with us to Cleveland and while we facilitated programs, the dads played and took the kids to the zoo. ✔️Advocates who have championed our mission and vision and promoted our programs and products. They have fanned the flame and supported our cause paving the way, providing the facilities, making key connections. You can have a dream, a vision, a strategy but it can fall flat without the people. Grateful for our team, family and the friendships who have taken up our cause, stepped up, and made things happen. Lift others up!

The PCLE has been created with one goal in mind – bring our leaders together to learn from other communities how they have addressed similar issues. Through this process, collectively we can better align our ideas, our resources, and our ability to take these challenges on together. From a city to a county level – from a public to a private sector connection – from the biggest to the smallest organization – together we accomplish more. https://bit.ly/3CviTUg

That word. “Impressionable.” Ooof. This one really hit me. When I think of the word “impressionable”my mind immediately thinks of a person who is young, naive, and inexperienced. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that’s not necessarily true. After thinking this through (or overthinking, depending on your point of view:) ) I would say that I am an “impressionable person”. This is not necessarily because I am young (well relatively a suppose), naive, or inexperienced. When I dissect what I think it really means to be “impressionable”, especially in the context in which Deshauna Barber is using it, it means to be easily convinced one way or another, to not stand your ground under scrutiny or pressure, and particularly to to be susceptible to doubt, intrinsic and extrinsic. And the more I thought about that the more a picture of a typical people pleaser came to form in my mind. Someone who is preoccupied with keeping harmony, to make sure that everyone around them is happy and comfortable, to remain “liked”. And that definitely describes me. It’s something I’ve been working on for a quite some time personally and professionally. So I’ve known that I have a tendency to be a people pleaser, much like most women if not all women who have been conditioned by our society, but I’ve never thought of myself as “impressionable”, but there it is. And it just made me think, “This is why…” This is why visibility and representation matter so much. This is why having role models and mentors is so important. Otherwise half the world population might get the wrong impression, future generations of women might get the wrong impression. And while being “impressionable” might have a negative connotation, there is the flip side of that. It means you can also be convinced that incredible things are quite possible, that we are capable of the extraordinary. We just have to be giving people the right impression.

I challenge the next generation to think beyond what they see and hear but instead think with their imagination.
