In-app messaging (IAM) is a dropped ball if you miss out on this. Any user engagement that happens outside the app - push/SMS/emails - doesn’t interfere with how the user is interacting with your app. So it won't really matter if a push notification or an email goes out 1-2 minutes after the user takes an action. But In-app messaging (IAM) NEEDS to happen in real-time. If not, it's just an internet explorer in a world full of chrome (No offense, IE. I still miss using you to download other browsers). Even a 10 second delay in IAM means the user has either: 1) Left the page 2) Is trying to complete another action or worst - 3) Has closed the app altogether . Send a welcome message when the user is on the app for the first time, NOT the 10th time. Show a "spin the wheel" for discount when the user is looking into the product, not AFTER they drop off. Well, you get the picture.. . PS. Here's a beautiful, well-timed user onboarding example from Binance to educate new users.
